David Luiz rejoined Chelsea from PSG at the beginning of the 2016-17 season for £31.50 million
The Brazilian international had become somewhat of an outcast under former manager Antonio Conte. The 31-year-old made just 10 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League last season. He was expected to be gone come the end of the season. However, to his credit, he stuck around and is now reaping the benefits.
Luiz has started all 5 of Chelsea’s opening five Premier League fixtures under Sarri. He has become a key member in the backline for the Blues. David Luiz’s contract with the Blues runs out at the end of this season. However, as per reports, Chelsea are all set to overlook their stringent policy of contract extensions for players over 30 years of age by offering the Brazilian a two-year extension. The Brazilian will reportedly be earning £125000 per week.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri expressed his desire to keep Luiz at the club. He said,
“David has a big future here — he will be very useful for us.
I don’t know what happened in the past but now he has a good chance.”

Luiz himself was all praise for his new manager:
“First of all, he’s a great person, great as a human. I believe in this philosophy, and then after that, he is a great coach. He wants to play with the ball, he wants to play with intensity, to work on the details and to give us all the information he can about the next game and the opponent. Every week he tries to make the best plan possible for the exact game and this is great because he is working in the best way for the team, for the collective.”
“I think his philosophy to live life is already great because he wants to enjoy every day, he wants to be happy and he wanted to take this opportunity to start one more chapter in his life.”
“I think that is one of the most important things in life; when you love to do something, when you’re happy”.
Chelsea have made a perfect start to the Premier League winning five in as many games. They sit at the top of the table. ahead of Liverpool on goal difference. And their defence looks much more reassuring as compared to the last season. Luiz has been among the major factors behind that.
