According to various reports, Chelsea is looking to sign Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk for a reported fee of £50m.
The 25-year-old centre-back has caught the attention of several clubs all over Europe. The latest reports suggest that Chelsea is preparing a bid around £55m to sign him next summer.
Van Dijk has been outstanding for the last one year with brilliant performances in Southampton defense. Various Premier League clubs have already shown in this Dutch international. Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool are other clubs who are interested in signing him.
It is understood that Southampton have put a price tag of £55m for this former Celtic centre-back. But this massive price tag doesn’t seem to be affecting the Premier League giants as this is a highly rated defender. There could also be a battle between many clubs for signing Van Dijk in next summer transfer window.
Van Dijk moved to Southampton from Celtic in 2015 for a reported transfer fee of £13m. He has played more than 60 games for the Saints and has scored 5 goals in the duration. In his second season at Southampton, he has grown up into a commanding defender and has also impressed the whole football world.
Recently in May, he signed a new long term contract of six years with the Saints. Under the management of Claude Puel, this Southampton defender has started establishing himself to one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. It is very much clear that the Premier League giants will be coming to buy this defender at any cost.
As per the Daily Mail, both Chelsea and Manchester City are currently leading the race to sign Van Dijk. He would undoubtedly be a great signing for both the clubs, and could also be a key player in either team’s title race.
It is understood that Chelsea are keen to add him to their defensive options. Antonio Conte was reportedly linked with signing Kalidou Koulibaly last summer, but the deal didn’t go through as expected. Lately Conte’s side has started enjoying success with a 12 match winning streak.
Pep Guardiola’s failed approach to sign Aymeric Laporte and Leonardo Bonucci, have made Manchester City suffer a lot in recent weeks. The Spaniard will be looking to sign a proven defender like Van Dijk at any cost.
Southampton is set to demand atleast £55m for their Dutch defender in next summer. But this price tag will not put Chelsea or Manchester City off as they are keen to bolster their defence.
