Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been warned about the selection problem after the arrival of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. Former Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop believes it will create a problem for the manager regarding Hudson-Odoi. The young prospect has been a key emerging star for the blues this season.
Chelsea Transfer Confirmed
Hakim Ziyech is now officially a ‘Blue’. Though the Moroccan will be seen at Stamford Bridge next season, the deal is complete and confirmed by Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag. “Ziyech to Chelsea? A transfer was coming, we expected it to happen,” the manager told Fox Sports. “And I actually already expected this one or two year earlier. And each time it was: ‘Wow, he stayed again’. We are just happy that we will still have him until the end of the season”, he said.
Ziyech: An Absolute Bargain
Ziyech has scored 48 goals and provided 82 assists in 159 games for the Dutch side after arriving from FC Twente in 2016. His form and play in last year’s Champions League made him an obvious hot property in the market. The blues, with the ban lifted, didn’t really do much business in the winter. But Lampard seems to have got his man finally. Chelsea officially announced confirmation of the transfer for a reported sum of €44m. The Dutch-born Moroccan will join the club on July 1.
Change of plans: Who’s in and who’s out?
With Ziyech arriving, 2 players will definitely take a back seat. Pedro, as hinted by Frank, will probably leave. The other, Willian will have a tough life ahead at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is club thriving with promising youngsters at the moment. Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Hudson Odoi being the most prominent ones. Talking of the wings, Odoi and Pulisic are already competing for a position. Willian, therefore, will have to put on a serious thought about his future at Chelsea.
Lampard’s Biggest Challenge
Coming back to youngsters, this will be Lampard’s biggest challenge -to play experience and satisfy young blood. A player of Ziyech’s ability is a definite plus for the squad, but a proper depth in the squad will be a feather in the cap for the English manager. Shaka Hislop, the former Portsmouth goalkeeper shared his views on the transfer.
Speaking to ESPN FC, he said, “I like it, given his age and his experience (Ziyech). But then, you look at who Chelsea have in Willian and Hudson-Odoi. Again, given what we’ve seen from Ajax I would take a chance on any of their players. But it does give you a real problem with Hudson-Odoi. Willian has been linked with a move away, but he’s still a player I would love to have in my squad. It gives Frank Lampard a problem, but those are problems that managers want to have.”
