The Blues are prepared to make a bid for AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas in this summer transfer window.
Chelsea has struggled in the Premier League this season and finished fifth in the table, outside a top 4 berth which makes them ineligible for the Champions League next term. But one of the main reasons why Chelsea had such a poor campaign was due to their inability to defend well in crunch games. The West London club made a number of defensive errors which eventually went on to hamper their title defense with manager Antonio Conte facing the sack this summer.
However, one of the main priorities for Chelsea this transfer window is to reassure the back line with re-enforcements. Chelsea is linked with a number of high-quality defenders and the latest man who has joined that list is Greek central defender Kostas Manolas.
According to the Express, Chelsea has identified Manolas as one of their prime targets this summer to bolster their rearguard. The 27-year-old defender was rock solid at the back for AS Roma and most notably during their Champions League encounter against Barcelona in the quarterfinals at the Italian capital when he eventually scored a dramatic late goal to ensure his side went on to the next round.
Chelsea is preparing a £32 million, which is also his release clause, in order to lure Manolas to Stamford Bridge and are also tempting him with more money. Manolas is currently on a £2.6 million (€3 million) wage a year deal at the Stadio Olimpico but Chelsea are ready to offer him a pay hike at £4.4 million ( €5 million) a year if he joins the Premier League.
Manolas is an accomplished and strong defender and he has proven that on many occasions with AS Roma. But we have seen defenders come to the Premier League and struggle to adapt to the nature and pace of attackers, Chelsea had a problem with Antonio Rudiger as well when he signed for the club but he took his time to fit in.
