Chelsea Legend Believes That This One Reason Will Cost Antonio Conte His Job

Former Portuguese midfielder Deco has stated that the sale of Diego Costa from Chelsea could cost Antonio Conte his job.

After winning the Premier League title in his debut season in England with Chelsea, it has been somewhat of a strange title defence for the Blues. Chelsea finished outside the top 4 this season which makes them ineligible for the Champions League but they also managed to defeat Manchester United in the final to clinch the FA Cup earlier last month.

However, Chelsea was involved in some poor decision making last summer allowing some key players to leave Stamford Bridge. This is what led to their rather underwhelming campaign and former Blue Deco believes that Diego Costa’s omission from the club is the main reason for Chelsea’s downfall which could inevitably lead to the sacking for Antonio Conte.

Deco Outlines The Importance Of Costa-

Speaking to Express Sport the 40-year-old ex-Chelsea star said that the Diego Costa was the main man for Chelsea last term, “I think we will see changing winners in the next years. Manchester City, they did something not normal in the Premier League. But Chelsea they won last season and for me, they lost one important player like Diego Costa, that’s my opinion.”

Deco added that Costa suited Chelsea’s style of play and despite other key players leaving the club the Spaniard’s departure to Atletico Madrid is what hurt them the most, “The way they play, Diego was very important for them. It was difficult to find a substitution. Morata is not the same; even Giroud is not the same. Diego was for me the perfect player for the way Conte played. I think they lost [Nemanja] Matic too, they had good midfielders but I think for me it was Diego Costa [leaving].”

Author’s Take-

Chelsea has struggled to replace Costa and Morata has been somewhat of a failure as his native’s replacement. Deco is right in pointing out the major mistake made by Conte but the Blues still managed to win the FA Cup which counts for silverware.
