Chelsea and their love affair with strikers continue as they are again linked with a new striker. Last season Tammy Abraham was given the duty of leading the line for the Blues. The academy product did well scoring 18 goals in all competitions.
At times, Frank Lampard also trusted Oliver Giroud and the Frenchman did not disappoint. The next season Chelsea decided they need a proper goalscorer. They decided to splash the cash on Timo Werner. Alongside him, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz were added to the team to add more goals and creativity.
So far it has been very poor for the Blues in front of goal. Werner is just a shadow of himself and he now resembles more of Torres and Morata. This season, Chelsea are again struggling to score goals.
It could be perhaps one of the reasons why Tuchel has been more defensive. However in the long run they will need a proper No.9 to fire goals for them. They clearly need a striker like Diego Costa who can win games for them.
Chelsea want Italian striker
According to Chelsea’s official website, Thomas Tuchel’s side is planning to move for Andrea Belotti. The Italian burst onto the scene in the 2016/17 season. At that time Belotti scored 28 goals in all competitions. Both Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United tried to sign him next summer.
Currently the 27 years old is not willing to sign a new contract with Torino. This is because in recent years despite his good performances the club hasn’t done well. The Granta are possibly facing the prospect of relegation now.
If Torino gets relegated, Belotti will surely leave the club. The former Palermo forward’s contract with Torino expires in 2022. Though his current contract has a release clause of $100 million, the Blues could sign him for a quarter of that amount. The likes of Tottenham and Everton have also shown interest in him.
Belotti is now 27 years old and he is in his peak years. This season as well he has scored 12 goals and further provided 6 assists in all competitions. In previous seasons as well his scoring record has been very good.
12th Man Opinion
Since bursting onto the scene, Belotti has been inconsistent in scoring goals. In the 2017/18 season, he only managed to score 13 goals. The next season he improved and scored 17 goals. The next season after that he scored 22 goals. This season is about to be over and he has only scored 12 goals.
There is no doubt that Chelsea are in need of a striker. Timo Werner is not the answer to the goal-scoring problems. The German struggles to operate when space is limited and he needs a partner to score goals. Also, he hasn’t been able to lead the line all by himself.
However, the answer to Chelsea’s goal-scoring issues is not Andrea Belotti. The Blues already have Tammy Abraham. Under Tuchel he hasn’t been given enough chances. It is pertinent to mention that the Englishman is still young and he is developing his game.
Last season he wasn’t consistent enough but he did score 18 goals in all competitions. It indicates that there is a goalscorer within him. Now it is his and Tuchel’s job to get that consistent goalscorer out. Even in the past, Chelsea has spent heavily on strikers only for them to fail. Perhaps Abraham should be given more chances at Stamford Bridge.
