The Blues are apparently keeping their tabs on Borussia Monchengladbach’s attacker Jonas Hofmann, with a move likely to take place in the summer.
Chelsea spent more than £220 million on seven new players last summer. The likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Hakim Ziyech joined the club for big money. But it’s fair to say they have not lived up to the expectations. The club made no significant signings in the January transfer window. The biggest talking point of January was the sacking of former manager Frank Lampard.
But with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea are likely to go big again this summer. The German has had an incredible start to his Chelsea managerial career. He has won five of his six games in-charge, conceding only one goal in the process. This series of runs has seen the club enter the top-4 of the Premier League table.
And already Tuchel and Chelsea are linked with a host of players. David Alaba, who said he will leave Bayern Munich this summer, West Ham’s Declan Rice, Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, and now Monchengladbach’s Jonas Hofmann all are Tuchel’s targets for this summer.
Hofmann to Chelsea?
According to Sport Bild, Chelsea are keeping a watchful eye over Borussia Monchengladbach’s Jonas Hofmann and could move for him in the summer.
The former Dortmund man was handed his debut by then-manager Jurgen Klopp. He was also played under Tuchel at Dortmund for two years. He then made a permanent move to Gladbach in 2016. So, Tuchel knows exactly what the player could offer his side in the Premier League.
The 28-year old is a versatile attacker and can play across any forward position. But his preferred position is at the right side of attack, the position where Chelsea are pretty stacked at the moment.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech both deploy the right-wing spot. But with rumours linking Ziyech with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer due to limited playing time, Chelsea might go for Hofmann this summer.
How good is Hofmann?
Marco Rose’s side has had a mixed campaign. They are currently seventh in the Bundesliga table. But it is their Champions League form that has been very impressive. They came second in their group, behind Real Madrid and above Inter Milan and Shakhter Donetsk. Their next hurdle is Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
And Jonas Hofmann has been key to Gladbach’s season. He has scored six goals and provided 10 assists in just 21 games this season, despite being out for two months with a muscle injury. What makes Hofmann special is his ability to create as well as score goals from the wing.
His performance against Bayern Munich was one of the standout performances this season. Gladbach stunned the German champions 3-2 last month. Hofmann scored two goals and rounded off his incredible performance with an assist.
He also made his Germany debut last October. At the age of 28, Hofmann is currently in his peak years. With Spurs also interested in the forward, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel make a move for Hofmann or not.
