Chelsea are again scouring for a new striker and they have again reached the Bundesliga for it. The search started with Kane and Lukaku from there it went to Erling Haaland, then to Robert Lewandowski. However, now it looks like they won’t be able to sign any of the four players mentioned above.
Thus now they are now looking to sign a new striker and Chelsea seem to have identified the player as well. They are yet to make a new signing this summer and it will bring in some relief to the Blues fans, as the opponent teams continue to sign new players.
Bundesliga striker for Chelsea
According to The Athletic, the Blues have identified Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic as their next target. The Austrian international joined the German in 2019, and last season, he had his breakthrough season. He scored 17 goals in all competitions in 36 games he played for Stuttgart.
Though he may not be as prolific as Haaland or Lewandoski but scoring 17 goals for a team that finished 9th in the Bundesliga is commendable. It indicates that the player has the potential to be a regular goalscorer. Kalajdzic’s biggest asset is his height, the Austrian is 6’7 in height, which makes him an able target for crosses inside the box.
He is also an intelligent attacker, and he often finds space in behind the opposition’s defence. Kalajdzic also holds the ball very well, which allows other players to play a one-two with him. Due to his height, opponents find it hard to take the ball away from him and this, in turn, helps other quick players to make runs in behind.
Why does Chelsea want to sign Kalajdzic?
Despite signing Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, the Blues have struggled for goals. Werner only managed six goals in the Premier League for Chelsea. On the other hand, Havertz only scored nine goals in all competitions. Tammy Abraham is out of favour with the new boss Thomas Tuchel. He was also a part of Chelsea’s offer of cash plus player deals.
Olivier Giroud has now left the club to join AC Milan. Not only this, they have been able to sign other top strikers as well. Erling Haaland was their primary target, but it seems unlikely that Chelsea will be able to match Dortmund’s asking price for him.
Should Chelsea sign Kalajdzic ?
The 24-years-old is valued at around $24 million by transfermarkt. Such a price is not an issue for a club like Chelsea. However, the question arises whether the Blues need to sign him or not? It is likely that upon his arrival he will take some time to adjust to the Premier League. Kalajdzic cannot be expected to lead the Blues to a Premier League title.
Thus, it would be unnecessary to sign him. Tuchel could give a chance to Tammy Abraham as well. The Englishman has a conversion rate of 19% which is not bad at all. There is no doubt that he is a better finisher than Werner. Though he is not a perfect striker but he is young and he can score goals on a more consistent basis.
There seems to be no need for Thomas Tuchel to sign Kalajdzic with Tammy Abraham, already at the club. Also, the money saved by not signing the Austrian can be used to fund a move for Erling Haaland next summer.
12th Man Opinion
Chelsea fans would prefer to see their club make more efforts to sign Erling Haaland. Not only this, it would be better if the Premier League giants try to sign a new defender as well. It is unlikely that the fans would be very happy with this news, though they do appreciate the idea of their club putting up efforts.
