Chelsea are eyeing a summer move for Torino forward Andrea Belotti, as Thomas Tuchel prepares for his first transfer window as Blues manager. But they will face stiff competition for his signature.
Tuchel suffered a shock first defeat as Chelsea boss at the weekend. A 5-2 loss to 19th placed West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge. The German coach had overseen 14 games without defeat since replacing Frank Lampard in January. But his unbeaten run as Chelsea head coach came to a stunning end on Saturday.
The Blues maintained their position in the top 4 of the Premier League table despite the defeat. But Liverpool, Spurs, and West Ham United are all just two points behind Tuchel’s side.
Chelsea will look to bounce back from their defeat as they have a crucial first-leg Champions League quarter-final tie against Porto in midweek. After which they travel to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace.
Blues’ interest in Belotti
Chelsea spent big in the previous summer transfer window under Frank Lampard. The likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, and Hakim Ziyech all joined the club for a hefty sum. But it’s fair to say they have failed to live up to their lofty standards.
And the club are expected to go big again this summer. According to Corriere Granata, Chelsea are among several clubs hoping to recruit Torino captain Andrea Belotti. But they are likely to face heavy competition from several clubs from England, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
The 27-year-old has been a consistent goal scorer for the Turin club for the past six years. During that time, he has scored 90 goals and provided 26 assists in Serie A. And despite Torino’s terrible league form this campaign, he has continued his impress, scoring 11 and assisting 5 in just 26 league appearances.
Belotti was previously linked with a move to Manchester United. But no deal materialised and the Italian striker decided to stay in Italy.
Is Belotti good enough for Chelsea?
Chelsea are in dire need of a new striker. Timo Werner has failed to replicate the form he showed in the Bundesliga since arriving at the club. Tammy Abraham’s inconsistency and fitness issues have seen him touted for a move away from Stamford Bridge. The future of Olivier Giroud is also unclear and his contract will also expire at the end of the season.
As a result, there are rumours of a move for Borussia Dortmund Erling Haaland. But the Norwegian forward will likely cost upwards of £100 million. This is where Belotti can help Chelsea.
He is a much cheaper option to Haaland. And if Torino were to get relegated, the price would go down even more. Belotti is also a reliable and consistent goal-scorer. Along with his lethal finishing, he possesses the strength to hold the ball up for his teammates and has a great aerial ability.
Belotti is in the prime of his career. And a coach like Tuchel can surely get the best out of him if he can lure him to Stamford Bridge this summer. Belotti can be Chelsea’s perfect long-term striker solution.
