Chelsea’s interest in Declan Rice is not something new. Frank Lampard was keen to bring the Rice back to his boyhood club. However last summer Chelsea spent heavily. Lampard still wanted Marina Granizakova to sign him last summer despite the big spending.
With the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, talks of signing Rice haven’t been buried. This season West Ham are performing beyond anybody’s expectations in the Premier League. The Hammers are challenging for a place in the top four. Despite this, the temptation to return to his boyhood club could persuade Rice to come back to Stamford Bridge.
Why Chelsea might offer West Ham a swap deal?
The football world is currently facing the wrath of the financial crises because of the pandemic. The lack of matchday income is making it difficult for clubs to generate enough revenue.
Chelsea are no exception but they still have a good amount of cash. The priority is to sign a striker like Romelu Lukaku or Erling Haaland. If the Blues sign a striker then they will be cash-strapped. According to The Express, the Blues could offer three players to sign Rice.
Three players Chelsea could offer
1. Tammy Abraham
The Englishman’s stock has fallen drastically since the arrival of Tuchel. So far it looks like the German does not fancy the former Aston Villa striker. West Ham has previously shown interest in the striker. Chelsea could use him to sign Rice.
According to Transfermarkt, Abraham’s transfer value is $43 million. While Declan Rice is valued at around $63 million. It will be up to Chelsea, as to how they convince West Ham for the rest of $20 million. The reason for the difference in value because Abraham has only scored 12 goals this season. While Rice has performed very well in his position. This season he has 2 interceptions per game, 1.1 drilled passes, and 1.1 tackle per game.
2. Ruben Loftus Cheek and Andreas Christensen
At one point in time, he was a shining example for academy players. However, an unfortunate injury derailed his progress. Currently, he is on loan at Fulham. Loftus Cheek is struggling to replicate the same form he had for Chelsea but he is still only 25 years old and he can still get back to his best.
However, if we see statistically it would not make any sense for West Ham to swap for Loftus Cheek. Despite being a defensive midfielder, Rice has made 0.7 key passes per game, while Loftus Cheek has only managed 0.6 key passes per game. It would be extremely difficult for the Blues to convince the Hammers for this swap deal. Perhaps the inclusion of Andreas Christensen might sweeten up the deal.
Why do the Blues want to sign Rice? Potential departures and potential alternatives
Chelsea wants a dominant defensive midfielder. Just at the age of 22, he has shown that he is captain material and he has good Premier League experience as well. He has the ability to play as a centre back and he is still developing as a player. Even Frank Lampard has stated that West Ham has a top player in their hands.
With the potential arrival of Rice, there will be some departures as well. Jorginho might leave the club to make way for the Englishman. Though it would be better if both stay at the club and Rice learns from the Italian. Bakayoko, right now on loan at Napoli could leave the club to generate funds.
The rise of the former Chelsea academy star hasn’t gone unnoticed. Premier League rivals Manchester United are also interested in him. They are willing to offer Jesse Lingard for Rice. Thus the Blues have to look out for alternatives as well. Denis Zakaria of Borussia Mönchengladbach is a similar player. While Ethan Ampadu on loan at Sheffield United will a more technical alternative, also he won’t cost anything.
12th Man Opinion
From Chelsea fans perspective it would be great to see Declan Rice return. They have already seen Salah, Lukaku, and De Bryune thrive at other clubs. They don’t want to see the same with Rice as well. Not only this many fans also want to see him and Mount play together. Both of them are very close friends as well.
