Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell is desperate to play in the Champions League and wants to leave Leicester City this season.
Chelsea may have their transfer hopes boosted as Leicester City full-back forces his exit off King Power Stadium. Reports in England have confirmed Chelsea target Ben Chilwell is pushing for a move as Leicester City miss out on Champions League football next year.
Leicester City’s fall from UCL to UEL
Leicester City has struggled to retain its ‘pre-hiatus’ form since football resumed in June 2020. Brendan Rodgers, who was almost sure to play the champions league will now have to suffice with a Europa League spot alongside Jose Mourinho.
The foxes have produced wonderful stars over the years as Ranieri lifted the league title in 2015. Since then, Ngolo Kante, Riyadh Mahrez, and lastly, Harry Maguire have all left for ‘bigger clubs’ and yet they continued to nurture fresh talents.
James Maddison moved from a bottom tier club to become one of the most promising midfield stars at Leicester City. Similar is the case of Çağlar Söyüncü, who moved from Germany to feature in Premier League team of the season. In fact, the list goes long and includes England full-back Ben Chilwell too.
England’s next Ashley Cole?
Ben Chilwell has honed his talent in Leicester youth academy and has grown to become one of the best-left backs in the premier league. He is not just strong in the back but works well to provide an extra limb in the attack as well.
The 23-year old has 6 direct involvements in 27 appearances, scoring 3 and assisting further 3, one of which was an absolute screamer versus Watford. He has a passing percentage of 78.3 percent and is looked up as a long time National team permanent left-back by Gareth Southgate.
But Ben will desperately seek elite football with age by his side. For the moment, Leicester cannot provide it, and the next season is Mourinho’s esteemed’ 2nd season. Needless to say, the Foxes’ Champions League future looks nebulous. Consequently, they may allow the full-back to leave.
In such a case, the probable exits are many – but he may prefer to stay in England under the nose of the National team gaffer with EURO possibly next year. The obvious clients are Chelsea and Manchester United.
Chelsea or Manchester United?
Chelsea has been abysmal in defense. They have the worst defensive record in the top 10 and perhaps one of the worst performances in their history. But Lampard has done a commendable job to build a team under a transfer ban. And when the ‘flood gates’ opened, the Englishman got busy – signing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.
However, Marcos Alonso has looked sloppy for the Blues. In fact, Lampard is ready to sell him if they get Chilwell. The latest reports, thereby, confirm, the interest is mutual. Frustrated with no ‘top 4 crowns’, he wants to leave his current club.
Manchester United, too are interested in him. However, with Williams and Shaw working well, Ole may repudiate a heavy transfer, prioritizing Sancho and a center back. Chilwell is not the first to force through a move. Aaron Wan-Bissaka did the same at Crystal Palace, so did Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal. It will be interesting to see how Chilwell ends up!
