Reports claim that Chelsea is leading the race against Arsenal to sign Olympique Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri.
The Blues have had a torrid season and have finished outside the top 4 which makes them ineligible to play in the Champions League next season. The Chelsea board are keen on revamping their squad in the summer transfer window and bring in a few more quality players in order to compete for the Premier League title next season.
One player that has caught their eye and attracted interest from other top suitors across the continent is Jean Michael Seri from Nice. The Ivorian midfielder has been exceptional for the French outfit and aided Nice to the sixth spot on the Ligue 1 table this season.
Arsenal recently appointed director Raul Sanllehi and that had given the Gunners a massive hope of signing Seri because of the transfer-guru’s previous relationship with the Ligue 1 star when Sanllehi tried to lure Seri to Barcelona. But there is a slight twist which has shifted the odds of Seri moving to London, with Chelsea being frontrunners.
According to a report published by the Mirror, Chelsea is prepared to offer a massive transfer fee in order for Nice to sell Seri. And the French club is looking to offload the 26-year-old star if Chelsea offers in excess of £40 million, which is what Nice value Seri at. Arsenal is in the process of holding negotiations with Seri’s representatives but Chelsea is still in the front seat to secure Seri’s services.
The Blues will be selling most of their fringe players that are on loan with different clubs across Europe and will be able to afford Seri in the summer. Seri is in the last 12 months of his contract at the Allianz Riviera stadium and is not willing to extend his stay at the club.
This news comes as a big blow to Arsenal because the Gunners are close to signing the Ivorian midfielder. But Chelsea too is in dire need of a strong midfielder to partner N’golo Kante or replace Tiemoue Bakayoko if either of the Frenchman is he leaves the club. Id prefers if Chelsea sign Seri because Arsenal isn’t really short of players in the midfield department.
