The Premier League is finally back in action after 2 weeks. The first matchup after the international break saw Thiago Silva see red 30 minutes into the game as Chelsea lost their first fixture under Thomas Tuchel against West Brom.
It was a difficult period for all the fans as it was 2 weeks without club football. However, we can now breathe as it has finally returned. And the return has been a banger. Chelsea who were on the back foot the entire game after seeing a red card lost against the relegation side.
Before the Premier League halted, both the clubs were on the opposite sides of the table. Chelsea has been in great form under their new boss Thomas Tuchel. Since his appointment, The Blues have not lost a single match and are on a 14-match unbeaten streak. West Brom on the other hand are 2nd from bottom with relegation looking a clear possibility. They haven’t won a single fixture in the month of March and their form hasn’t seen much improvement after appointing Sam Allardyce.
Chelsea has climbed up the Premier League table after the string of brilliant results and are currently 4th in the table. They have kept their Champions League hopes intact but in order to keep it like that, they must have to keep winning the remaining matches. There are plenty of teams that can steal that position if any teams in that zone drop points. As for West Brom, they can only hope that the team above the relegation zone loses all their fixtures and The Baggies somehow win them all. They are 10 points off safety.
Blues defeated by The Baggies:
This fixture was straightforward. Chelsea were the favorites against a side that has been struggling to grab even a point. The Blues were supposed to grab the 3 points to add to their top-4 run as it should have been a walk in the park. But Thomas Tuchel has finally been handed his first defeat as a Chelsea manager, and it is a heavy one.
Chelsea has lost 2-5 at home against the relegation side team, West Bromwich Albion in their first match after the break. It is also a shocking one as not only have they been humiliated, but this might prove to be a dent in their top-4 race.
It was all well and fine in the beginning as Chelsea was doing the thing they usually do. They took the lead from a brilliantly executed cross. However, things turned around once Thiago Silva was shown red. The Baggies took complete advantage of that. They scored 2 quick goals in the added time of the first half.
They led by 1 goal at half-time, but they knew they had to add more to secure a win, and they did exactly that. Tuchel was not going to stay back and played attacking football with 10-men. And West Brom took their chances and added more. Another 2 goals were added in 5 minutes as they looked to finish the game.
Chelsea substitute Mason Mount gave a ray of hope with his goal in the 71st minute. However, it could only be a consolation as the visitors sealed with another goal in the added time to hand Chelsea their first defeat under Thomas Tuchel.
Jorginho the reason for Chelsea defeat?
We have seen teams coming back from behind with 10-men. But not all occasions are the same. Thomas Tuchel displayed a 3-man defence and losing one from them changed the dynamics of the squad. Early in the 5th minute, Jorginho made an error that Matheus Pereira capitalized on. Thiago Silva had to make up for his fellow player’s mistake and brought the player down outside the box. He saved a goal but was shown a yellow for that tackle.
The second incident came at the half-an-hour mark. Jorginho was the culprit behind this one too. He played the pass in a dangerous position which saw the ball tackled by Okay Yokusulu. It was again Silva’s duty as the last man to save the team. He had to block the opponent’s shot but instead catches the player in the process.
He was shown a second yellow and the game turned from thereon. However, many fans were fuming with the Brazilian midfielder’s display as they felt that Thiago’s presence would have been crucial in the match which they lost. Chelsea conceded more goals today than they have conceded in their last 14 matches.
