Chelsea fans are dreaming after transfer target’s club hints at future without star

Inter Milan seem to have hinted that not all is well with star striker Mauro Icardi, which has left the Blues fans in a happy meltdown

The Italian giants announced recently that they had decided to hand over the captain’s armband to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, which has hinted at the club’s attempt to get Icardi to focus on his main job, that of scoring goals for the team. This has ensured that Chelsea supporters have taken their excitement levels to new levels, with many going on social media to air their take on the issue post the announcement.

Not long ago, the Argentine hitman was named by Chelsea fans as their dream January transfer window signing thanks to a transfer survey conducted by last month. The striker, as has been expected of him, has been in fine form this season for Inter, scoring nine goals in 20 games. However, he has had a barren run recently, and after having notched nine goals in the first 13 games, Icardi has gone goalless over his last seven league appearances — his worst spell since joining the club in 2013.

This barren run over has led to all kinds of speculation arising regarding his future, with talks over a new deal at the San Siro reportedly stalling, and leading to suggestions that a number of Europe’s top clubs would love to land his signature should be become available. It has gone so far that Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has requested the club to make a deal happen as soon as possible, for the sake of the first team and Icardi’s fortunes.

He had this to say after the narrow win over Parma at the weekend: “Mauro is evidently seeing his performance affected by some situations that have been going on recently. He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him. The directors agreed to start talking about the contract, so now they need to go there and conclude it.”

Contract talks and his uncertain future seem to have certainly had an impact on the club, with Icardi being that stripped of the club captaincy so that he can concentrate on regaining his form and it worry about other things. And this move has got Chelsea fans to dream, along with fans of other clubs, with most believing that there is more to this move, with the 25-year-old’s future still up in the air.

Let’s take a look at some of the Twitter reactions from the Blues supporters:

Chelsea fans have been desperate to see a world class striker lead their team’s line, for they have not seen a striker worth his salt at Stamford Bridge in a while, with Diego Costa the last true world class hitman to showcase his talents in west London over the last few years. His successors in Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata have been woefully short of quality , with the Spanish striker only recently ending his hellish stay in London with a two-year loan move to Atletico Madrid and the former sure to follow him out the exit door come summer. Gonzalo Higuain has just come in, so Chelsea fans must be salivating at the thought of the former Real Madrid man linking up with countryman Icardi day in and day out in England if their club can make any such deal happen!
