Chelsea has signed Ziyech and Werner as Lampard rebuilds. Havertz transfer will stop Chelsea from another deal financially.
Chelsea may fail to land a double cannon in their team with a possible deadlock between the Havertz and Oblak deals. Frank Lampard has secured two quickfire signings even before the window opened.
However, reports both in Germany and England have confirmed they will need to prioritize either a midfielder or a goalkeeper as they will (financially) only be able to end up with only one. Atletico Madrid are aware of Chelsea’s interest, have been for 2 months now. But they know the Blues can only afford one of Havertz and Oblak.
Oblak is La Liga’s one of the very best!
Jan Oblak has become one of La Liga’s best and most consistent goalkeeper in his 6-year stint at Atletico Madrid. He won the Golden glove last year and many consider to be the best goalkeeper in the world right now, primarily because of his consistency.
In the 2019/20 season, he missed out on the golden glove, falling short by just 1 clean sheet. But he still added a feather to his cap when he finished 100 clean sheets against Osasuna. The feat came in just 182 appearances, the quickest in La Liga history.
Slovenia played a crucial role to knock out the defending European champions Liverpool out of the tournament. But he has a release clause of £120 million in his contract – an impossibly high one for a goalkeeper. With coronavirus pandemic severely affecting the economy, the red-and-whites may sell him if a fee close to that arrives.
A lot of interested parties
Simeone has, however, maintained that Oblak is an absolute asset for his team. He has maintained that Jan is very ‘decisive’ on the field as well as in the dressing room. “Hopefully he can continue with us”, the Argentine said. Perhaps, hope is a dangerous thing.
If the goalkeeper wants to leave, Atletico will look for a 9-figure fee. Not many Premier League clubs can afford it – both Manchester clubs and Chelsea, maybe. With Ederson up solid, Pep will definitely look away. But the Red Devils may sniff an opportunity.
David De Gea has slipped too badly as Henderson has outshined him on loan at Sheffield United. That gives Ole 2 options – either sell De Gea to Henderson the No.1 spot or buy a better option. Woodward is a money man too, and that is the reason Oblak is a surprise inclusion in their shortlist.
Chelsea in a tough position now
Chelsea’s position is, in fact, murkier. They bought Kepa Arrizabagala for over £70 million from Athletic Bilbao in 2018. In 2 years, their club-record signing is a liability Lampard wants to get red as soon as possible. If you were looking for a ‘that escalated quickly’ moment, it is this!
The Blues have, however, spent judiciously since – ousting Hazard and Morata and signing Werner and Ziyech. Marina Granovskaia, Chelsea’s director has a reputation for being an astringent negotiator. Still, affording Havertz and Oblak for their asking fee may go well over £200 million. That’s where the double deal looks a meek possibility.
Kepa has, however, fallen out with the manager and has insisted that he will no longer play with the club, which means they need a goalkeeper soon. It can be Oblak, maybe someone else. However, if at all, it is Jan Oblak, other clubs will pounce on Havertz as Chelsea may rummage funds for him.
