Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United have been given a huge boost for the upcoming transfer window. They have been selected as the potential pursuers alongside Real Madrid for Rennes Wonderkid, Eduardo Camavinga.
Eduardo has had a tough life. Being born in a refuge camp, he escaped to France at the age of 2 along with his family. After settling there, another disaster struck them, burning down their family house and properties in 2013. And this is what proved to be his motivation.
He joined Rennes in 2013 and came through the youth process. His dedication helped him become one of the brightest and the most sought player of the current time. After spending 5 years in the Academy, he was promoted to the first team. By doing so, he broke many records along the way.
At the age of 16, he became the youngest player in the history of Rennes to get a professional call-up. Making his debut in 2019, he became the youngest player in the club’s history to do so. He has made 75 appearances for the club so far and has attracted a lot of attention. Although he has scored only 2 goals, which is not at all relevant given his age, he has been dubbed as the ‘best young player in the world’.
In 2020, he broke into the National squad after Paul Pogba was out due to sickness. In the 3 months span from August to November, he became the youngest player to be called to the senior team, the youngest to make the debut, and the youngest to score for France since World War 2. He achieved all these feats at the age of 17.
Analysing the ‘Eduardo Camavinga’ situation:
Camavinga has a contract with Rennes for another year. But he has already attracted interest from many big clubs. One such club is Real Madrid. The 18-year-old sensation first attracted attention from Los Blancos when his performance for Rennes against PSG in 2019 helped them win that match. In fact, it was Zinedine Zidane who had shown more interest than Real Madrid. Eduardo is a great admirer of the French legend and only sees his future with Zidane. The strong relation between them has made him sure that he can improve considerably under the coach.
But there is a slight problem that is blocking that team-up. Zidane’s position at the club is also not stable. Real Madrid have been struggling a lot this season. They had one of the worst starts to the season and has somehow turned it around. But they are 6 points behind the top and a league trophy is looking unachievable.
They were also on the verge of being knocked out of the Champions League group stage for the first time but they survived. Madrid never used to survive at any stage as they were strong enough to cruise through. However, this season has been offbeat and so is Zidane’s future. If Camavinga’s aim to play is with Zidane rather than Madrid, then the question arises if he will move to Santiago Bernabeu next season.
Chelsea and Manchester United given the upperhand:
Chelsea and Manchester United are in the race for a Champions League spot for the next season. While the prior are still in that competition, the latter bowed out in the group stage. The Blues have seen a tremendous change after the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as their manager. Thanks to him, they are back in the top-4 of the Premier League. They have not lost a single match since January end. They even knocked out the La Liga leaders, Atletico Madrid out of the Champions League without conceding even a goal.
Manchester United are enjoying slow progress as they sit 2nd in the Premier League. Their hopes for silverware now lies only in the Europa League after being defeated by Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Both of them are well known for their academic history. These clubs are built on the basis of youth and we have seen many legends come through this process. When the 18-year-old Frenchman made the headlines, they had already started doing the necessary things. He can be a great addition to either of the clubs with the versatility he provides. Moreover, Eduardo Camavinga’s agent even gave a small hint regarding a move to the Premier League.
Camavinga can play next year in the Premier League. He is that good. Whether he will or not, I don’t know. His background has been tough if you know what he went through as a refugee and the burning of his home. But his character is amazingly strong. He is not your average 18-year-old. Playing in front of 100,000 people is not going to scare him. He’s a lovely boy and I think he’s going to be a superstar.” – Jonathan Barnett told The Athletic.
