Chelsea was the only club that was able to spend a fortune in the previous summer window. After a decent season from Frank Lampard’s debut season. Chelsea chose to reinforce their squad for the English manager. However, despite spending nearly £200m in transfers, Lampard was unable to make solid progress this term.
As a result, Lampard got the sacking with Thomas Tuchel replacing him. The German manager has been doing great so far. Tuchel’s Chelsea squad is now on a 14-game unbeaten run. But despite the good form, there are multiple changes that may help improve their form.
After spending a fortune last summer many thought Chelsea may not be active in the transfer window. However, club owner Roman Abramovich is keen to reinforce the squad. Hence, Tuchel and his scouts have been targeting a list of players ahead of the summer window.
Most Premier League clubs are still struggling to raise funds after the coronavirus pandemic. However, Roman Abramovich’s net worth of £14.4b is helping Chelsea to fund more transfers. Thomas Tuchel is reportedly prioritizing a striker as well as a defender.
Chelsea eye Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland is the top priority of most European clubs. The West London side is also keen to lure in the Norwegian striker to Stamford Bridge. But there is tough competition from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester City as well as Manchester United. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund are looking for a hefty £150m if they are to sell their star striker.
But such a price tag is too much for most clubs. With only Chelsea and Real Madrid the most likely clubs to raise the amount. But the player’s interest may also play a role to lower the price. Haaland’s release clause can be activated next season and most clubs are targeting that opportunity.
Haaland’s father as well as his agent Mino Raiola were in Spain yesterday. The duo held talks with Barcelona, Real Madrid and also met with Valencia. No news of any solid deals has yet emerged. The duo are likely to fly to England soon to meet up with the English clubs. Chelsea may look to get an upper hand.
With so many parties showing a solid interest in the star. It will be a tough battle for all the clubs to seal a deal. Also, Dortmund’s interest to retain the player will pose more threats. However, Chelsea’s Marina Granovskaia may try to negotiate her way through the deal.
A goalkeeper and a defender also a priority
Thomas Tuchel is also looking to sign a goalkeeper in the summer. The west London side’s interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma has been solid for a while now. The 22-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the season. However, AC Milan are trying to renew his contract. But should they fail to do so Chelsea will pounce on the opportunity?
The Blues are also targeting Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule. The center-back’s contract expires at the end of next season. And Thomas Tuchel feels that signing the German will help reinforce their defence. Also, Thiago Silva and Christensen’s future at Chelsea looks under doubt. So the arrival of Sule will help balance their backline.
If Chelsea are able to seal a deal with all of their targets. The Blues will have a solid squad that will be equally good in attack as well as defence. Should all these transfers happen as per their hopes the Chelsea lineup for the next season will be. Donnarumma, Reese James, Azpilicueta, Sule, Rudiger, Ben Chilwell, Kante, Kovacic, Mount, Havertz and Haaland.
Ziyech, Jorginho, and the others will also come in during squad rotation. But this is still an uncertain lineup. With a couple more months left until the summer window, anything can happen. Chelsea are currently hoping to finish in the top-four.
