Manchester United were victorious against the Italian side to keep Solskjaer’s first final alive. Roma have never been successful against United at Old Trafford in the past and the same repeated on Thursday at Europa league semi-final clash.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded his best eleven to face the Italian club. Solskjaer went with his usual 4-2-3-1 formation and Edison Cavani being the lone striker upfront. While David de Gea was the shot-stopper with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof pairing up at the heart of defense.
On the other hand, Roma went on with a 3-4-2-1 formation under Fonseca. The Serie A side had former United star Chris Smalling in their starting line-up. Edin Dzeko Played up front with support from Pellegrini and Mkhitaryan from behind.
French midfielder Jordan Veretout couldn’t continue the game with just five minutes played. Fonseca had no other choice other than to take him out at the start. Former Fiorentina player was replaced by 23-year-old Villar.
After this substitution, Roma were looking to make a build-up play. However, Red Devils surprised Roma by scoring the first goal of the game in ninth minute courtesy of sweet finish from Bruno Fernandes. Pogba’s ball from the left flank was beautifully laid-off for on rushing Fernandes to send it past Pau.
Rick Karsdorp made a good run on the right flank and made a sliding attempt to get inside the box. Paul Pobga also made a slide to block away from the cross, but the ball hits his arm. Pellegrini made no mistake from the spot to level the score.
Roma lost three players to injury inside first-half:
The Italian club was forced to make another change in the first-half after losing out Veretout in the fifth minute. Pau Lopez suffered a shoulder injury by making an fingertip save of Pogba’s effort on goal. By saving the shot, Pau slipped his shoulder and had to be taken off.
Mirante came in as a replacement for the injured shot-stopper in the 27th minute. And, by this substitution, Roma had to make two forced changes within the half-hour mark in the game. Spinazzola made a mazy run on the left flank to provide a wonderful reverse pass to Pellegrini.
Pellegrini squares it to Edin Dzeko, who sends it past Spanish goalie without any hassle. The play did work well on the left side of the pitch for the Italian side. Roma took the lead for the first time in the game against United to make it 1-2.
Complete dominance from Manchester United in the second-half:
To make things worse for Roma, left-back Spinazzola gets injured and makes way for Brazilian Peres. The left wing-back becomes the third player to get substituted in the first half with an injury. However, the Italian side was still in the lead by end of the first half.
Moreover, Roma were confident going into the second half. But, things didn’t work out well for Roma as United came in blazing their guns in the second half. Chris Smalling and Cristante were struggling to control United’s attacking efforts. Cavani made a superb finish on the top corner to level the scoreline.
Cavani gave United the lead yet again in the 64th minute. While Bruno Fernandes scored another goal from the spot via Smalling’s poor tackle inside the box. Pogba and Greenwood scored a goal each from their part to make it 6-2 at the Old Trafford. United are just 90 minutes away from playing the Europa League final for the first time under Solskjaer.
