After the shock departure of Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid might lose another one of their defensive superstars. Raphael Varane can follow in the footsteps of his former captain and look for a move away from Madrid.
Sergio Ramos had a different scenario as the player wanted to stay but the club didn’t want a 2-year contract. In Varane’s case, the talks were going on for quite some time as the pressure of a contract extension was building.
Varane will soon enter the last year of his contract with Real Madrid. He has been prolonging talks of an extension for a while now. The player may come out with a decision after the Euros.
However, the general feeling is that Varane does not want to extend his stay at Madrid. Manchester United are one of the top contenders for signing the Frenchman. United have also tabled an initial £50m bid for the player.
However, Madrid want a figure of £80m for Varane. The club did sign David Alaba as a free agent but Varane’s departure will send them looking for another defensive signing. Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is a target but his £80m release clause could be a problem.
As an alternative Carlo Ancelotti is eyeing a player whom he has seen playing a first hand in the Premier League. Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana has emerged as a potential target for Real Madrid.
Madrid eyeing Wesley Fofana as Varane replacement:
Wesley Fofana is coming off his breakthrough season under Brendan Rodgers. Leicester had a really good campaign this year. They won the FA Cup and finished 5th in the table although the club will feel they could have done better.
Brendan Rodgers is slowly building Leicester City into a top 6 team and Fofana is a key part of his project. The defender has featured in 42 games for the Foxes with 1 assist to his name. The player is comfortable on the ball and has had a rock-solid season for Leicester.
According to reports from a Spanish publication Fichajes, Real Madrid are scouting Fofana as Varane’s replacement as Carlo Ancelotti was impressed with Fofana’s performances in his time with Everton.
Fofana could be a cheaper alternative than Sevilla’s Joules Kounde. However, Leicester will not make it easy to sign him. The player still has 4 years left in his contract with the Foxes. Harry Maguire was sold at a price of £80m.
Wesley Fofana is at a similar stage in his career. Although he is not the captain and he is just 20 years old with a high ceiling for the future. Leicester wouldn’t budge for a figure less than £65-70 million for him, the Foxes have historically proven that they are hard negotiators.
As a reason, Varane’s transfer fee will also play a key part. Madrid aren’t in the best financial condition which is why they would like Varane’s fee to cover their expenses on a new signing. United might face some trouble in negotiating for Varane’s final fee.
