Axar Patel chipped in with promising performance ever since he got the nod to play for the team in the second Test match against England. Earlier, he was ruled out of the first Test after he had complained of some discomfort and pain in his left knee.
Subsequently, the medical team sidelined him and named Shahbaz Khan as his replacement. However, the 27-year-old Axar Patel made a grand comeback to the Indian team in the second Test match in Chennai.
The left-arm spinner went on to pick his maiden fifer in his Test debut. He also picked up two more wickets to his name. In the end, he ended up with 7 wickets in the second Test match at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
He continued to weave the magic in the pink-ball Test match in Ahmedabad where he took a six-wicket haul in the first innings. Axar Patel once again deceived England batsmen with subtle bowling variations of good line and lengths in the second innings.
In the end, he accounted for 5 dismissals to his name. Overall, he ended the match with 11 wickets. Rightly so, the left-arm spinner was adjudged the man of the match for his bowling display.
Virat Kohli interrupts interview involving Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya
Indian captain Virat Kohli couldn’t have asked for a better and collective performance from his boys in the pink-ball Test. Team India won the third Test match by 10 wickets and took a 2-1 lead in the series.
Following a memorable triumph, Kohli appeared to be in a jolly mood as he crashed Axar Patel’s interview with Hardik Pandya. When Axar interviewed Hardik, captain Kohli intervened and stole the show.
As Baroda all-rounder tried to introduce Virat Kohli, the latter quickly made a remark in Gujarati, which left both the players – Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel in splits. The video clip is doing the rounds on social media.

I was concentrating on what I need to work on
The 27-year-old Axar Patel also became the first Indian spin bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in the day-night Test. His 6/38 in the first innings is the second-best bowling spell in the day-night Test. It is worth mentioning here that Devendra Bishoo registered 8/49 against Pakistan in Dubai in 2016.
After the third Test, Axar Patel added that he concentrated on enhancing his game to get rid of negative vibes. In doing so, he gained confidence. Despite being out of the team for the last 3 years, he still was positive that he would get a chance again.
The 27-year-old had already represented the Indian national cricket team in 2 ODIs and 11 T201s. Needless to say, he had been out of the white-ball squad since a T20I against Proteas in Capetown back on February 24, 2018.
The fourth and final Test match will kick-off in the same venue on March 4. It will be quite interesting to see how Team India approaches the last Test. England’s path to qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship final came to an end.
