Manchester United winning run in Carabao Cup was ended yesterday as Manchester City defeated them by 0-2 in the semi-finals. The Reds will be aiming to bounce back from the loss in the next game.
On Saturday, Man United will host the Championship outfit, Watford, in the third round of the FA Cup. After their latest semi-final exit, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that Bruno Fernandes might be rested against Watford on Saturday.
Bruno’s fitness should be the Priority
The Portuguese midfielder has been the central figure since his arrival. In 28 games in all the competitions this season, he has scored 16 goals and assisted 9 times. Not only the goal contributions but his mere presence in the middle of the park elevates the team’s performance. But, with a long season ahead of us, Solskjaer cannot deploy him to start every game.
Bruno Fernandes is the type of player who wants to play every game and does not want to lose even a single minute. Being said that, every player needs a certain amount of rest and we believe Saturday’s game against Watford can be that game for him.
When inquired about what team set-up is he thinking to put up at Old Trafford on Saturday, Solskjaer replied: “There will be a few changes, of course, there will as it’s such a season that we have to. I will see tomorrow [Thursday] morning who is fit and who is not fit and who is ready to go.”
“If one player who deserves to be rested, at least for a few minutes, it is Bruno Fernandes. But the question remains, whether he would like to have a game off? Solskjaer accepted that the midfielder wants to be a part of every game but he will have a chat with the midfielder to see how comfortable he is.”
“He wants to play every game, Bruno. Of course, it’s a long season. Let’s see what team we come with on Saturday so I’ll have a chat with him about how he feels” – Solskjaer
Last week, Ole described Bruno as a machine who can recover very quickly from the games. At the same time, the manager will be cautious of risking the midfielder. Currently, Manchester United is sitting in the second position in Premier League with as many points as the league leader Liverpool. They are also one of the strong candidates to win the Europa League this season. If Solskjaer wants his team to continue doing well, Bruno Fernandes needs to stay fit.
Will Van De Beek get a start?
Donny Van De Beek has had a tough start to life at Old Trafford. He did score a goal on his debut but since then, he has failed to get consistent game time. The former Ajax player is a stylish midfielder with a big future but Solskjaer is not able to fit him in the playing XI due to Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba. If the manager decides to rest the Portuguese midfielder, Van De Beek should start at the number 10 position for the Reds.
Edinson Cavani is a sure-shot to miss the game against Watford. It is because of the 3-game ban levied on him by Football Association (FA) due to the alleged racist post on Instagram. This will be his final game of suspension and he will be available for selection from the next game onwards.
The Reds have already been knocked out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup this season. But, they are still in three competitions and are a robust challenger in each three of them.
It’s been more than two years that Ole has taken the charge of the team. But, he is still to win any trophy at Manchester United as a manager. Can his long drought come to an end this season?
