Manchester United‘s improvement since Bruno Fernandes joined the club in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon has been nothing short of inspirational. So much so, that some United fans think he should be the captain ahead of Harry Maguire.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were struggling massively before Fernandes’ came to the club. But the 26-year old’s technical abilities and leadership qualities has given United the boost they desperately needed.
Since making his move to Old Trafford, Fernandes has been involved in 54 goal contributions in just 61 appearances. And this season, he has scored 15 goals and provided 10 assists in just 25 Premier League games. He has arguably been the best player in the league.
He has broken records after records, becoming the second fastest United player ever to reach 50 goal contributions. Also, he became the first Premier League player to win four Premier League Player of the Month award in a single calendar year.
United’s season so far and plans ahead
The Red Devils’ season has been topsy-turvy. They were top of the league in mid-January. But defeat to Sheffield United and disappointing draws against Everton and West Bromwich Albion coincided with Manchester City’s relentless form, has seen them lose the top-spot to their noisy neighbours.
Currently, the club are second in the league 15 points behind City, having played a game less. And they will have to put in great effort to hang on to that spot, with Leicester City just a point behind them.
Elimination from the Champions League, despite winning their first two games, almost got Solskjaer sacked. But they are the favourites to win the Europa League and have a chance to win their first major trophy since 2017.
The summer ahead is very crucial for United. If they want to bridge the gap between them and Manchester City, they have to spend big. And their talisman Bruno Fernandes can again help them get their targets.
How Bruno can help Manchester United
Portugal are entering their golden generation. They are the current holders of the Euros and also won the Nations League in 2019. And there are no shortage of Portuguese talent in the Premier League. Fernandes along with City’s Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo are some of the names. And Fernandes can help United bring some more compatriots to Old Trafford.
Red Devils will be keen to exercise their relations with super-agent Jorge Mendes, when looking to recruit this summer. He represents a host of Portuguese players. One of them is Wolves’ winger Pedro Neto. The 20-year has been one of the best young players in the league this season. Playing with Fernandes would be a dream for any young Portuguese player.
Another Mendes’ client linked with United is Andre Silva. As reported, the Eintracht Frankfurt forward has been in great form this season, scoring 19 goals in the Bundesliga. With Cavani’s yet to sign a new contract, which expires at the end of this season, Silva makes perfect sense for United.
There are also signs that United might be in for Sporting Lisbon’s winger Pedro Goncalves, another Mendes’ client. The 22-year man actually replaced Fernandes at Sporting when the United man left the club in January 2020. Sporting has slapped a released-clause of £52.5 million on Goncalves. But joining United would be a dream move for any player. All-in-all, Fernandes can become a major bargaining tool for United and they are set to reap the rewards.
