Footballers from around the world were asked to pick a team of one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers wholly based on their 2017/18 performances. FIFPro will be revealing the final World XI for 2018 in a ceremony that will take place in London on the 24th of September.
FIFPro, the Federation Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels, have been inviting professional footballers from around the globe to pick their best XI for the previous season to come up with the FIFPro World XI since 2005. The players were asked to pick one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers.
In 2009, the FIFPro tied up with FIFA and the name of the award was changed to FIFA FIFPro World XI. The speciality of the award was that it was picked by the footballers themselves.
While the final XI is yet to be released, the footballers union has released the list of nominees which include a total of 55 players.
Gianluigi Buffon, David de Gea, Keylor Navas, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Thibaut Courtois are the five number ones to make the list, while 20 defenders have also been named.
