Belgian defender Thomas Vermalean is not happy with his current situation at FC Barcelona. He is visibly frustrated and disappointed at his lack of matches under Valverde. He was on loan last season to AS Roma. After his loan expired and he back to Catalunya, he is not getting enough chances in the squad. FC Barcelona’s manager Ernesto Valverde has no plans of including Vermalean in starting XI for next fixtures. It seems as if Valverde has no intention of counting the Belgian for Catalan’s squad.
“I can’t even play with the second team”, said Vermalean, as reported by Marca news.
Uncertain future in club
Blaugranas are having an excellent start to their campaign this season. Ernesto Valverde believes in the rotation policy. He has not played with the same squad in any 2 consecutive games. Valverde has always made 1 or 2 changes before every fixture thus giving equal chances to Denis Suarez, Sergi Roberto, Aleix Vidal and others. He is using every backup player to their squad who were not given a fair chance under Luis Enrique’s management.
In spite of such rotation 31-year-old, Thomas Vermaelen has still not been brought to the squad. Vermaelen was brought to Barcelona from Arsenal. He did not have an impressive campaign after his arrival as he only appeared in 11 matches over 2 year period. Last year he was sent on loan to AS Roma. The biggest problem for him is that FC Barcelona is not willing to sell him anytime soon. Barcelona has Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti, and Javier Mascherano as first choice center-backs. It seems as Vermaelen is just an injury backup to the Catalan Giants.
Thomas Vermaelen signed for FC Barcelona in 2014. He was bought from Arsenal.
Thomas Vermaelen was visibly frustrated when he talked to Belgian publication Derniere Heure about his situation at FC Barcelona.
“The club told me that I couldn’t leave anytime soon”, said Vermaelen.
‘I had to stay in spite of the interest of several clubs, now I cannot play with the second team also. It is a difficult situation.
‘I believe my chances are around just after the international break. It would be positive, of course.
‘I have talked to the coach, obviously and he is happy with how I’m training. It is clear that a club like Barcelona, three central defenders are not enough, they need four or five.
‘A suspension or injury will mean that I can return to the squad and these things can happen very quickly. Whilst things aren’t going well at the moment, next week may be different.

FC Barcelona has three central defenders already in the squad. The problem is two of them Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano is already past their 30 and not in their peak forms. Barcelona needs to search for a better alternative as a 31-year-old Vermaelen is not an alternative for a bright future. They should invest in Colombian defender Yerry Mina and Matthijs de Ligt, an ajax youngster.
Barcelona should let go of Thomas Vermaelen now. He has not performed up to club’s level and has not got enough chances also. Everton and Anderlecht are showing interest in Thomas Vermaelen. Belgian himself wants to depart the club now as he is frustrated with not getting enough play-time.
