FC Barcelona want Clement Lenglet to agree to a move to AS Roma as they look to bring in Lorenzo Pellegrini. The Spanish club is trying to sign the Italian through a swap deal.
Barcelona are currently looking to strengthen their squad after a rather disappointing 20/21 season. New President Joan Laporta has some work to do after Bartomeu’s reign.
Lorenzo Pellegrini currently has a buyout clause worth £25.8 million. But reports suggest Barcelona don’t want to pay and instead ready to offer Lenglet in a swap deal. But they have a problem since the Frenchman has said no to the move.
Barcelona want Lenglet gone?
The current Barcelona squad are under immense pressure after finishing 3rd in the La Liga this season. The club finished 7 points below Champions Atletico Madrid and 5 points below rivals Real Madrid. Though they won the Copa Del Ray trophy, watching Suarez win the La Liga with Atletico would have left a bitter taste in their mouths.
The Catalans bowed out of the title race after a 2-1 loss to Celta Vigo on 16th May which had Lenglet sent off a few minutes before the winner. That was just one of the moments when Barcelona fans have wanted Lenglet gone. The defender despite being solid at the back has been criticised by the fans and not appreciated for his work.
It seems like Barcelona higher-ups have the same idea as the fans and now want him gone. They have engineered a swap that would see Lenglet go to Roma while their Pellegrini would arrive at Camp Nou. The Frenchman poured cold water on speculation linking him with a move away from the club before the end of the season.
“I can’t see myself leaving, I signed a new contract last season. I will be at Barça next season.”
The La Liga giants recently lost Wijnaldum to PSG, after the French giants swooped in and hijacked the deal for the Dutchman. Barcelona was going to sign Wijnaldum for free. But now they have to look for his substitute and Pellegrini is at the top of the list.
Pellegrini scored 11 goals and provided 9 assists across all competitions for Roma in 20/21. His offensive ability makes him the perfect addition to the squad, which is a little too dependent on Lionel Messi despite having stars such as Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele in the team.
What will Barcelona do?
Barcelona needs a midfielder who would increase the offensive output of the team. The club is looking to make a signing as soon as possible. Having lost out on Wijnaldum, they have now been linked to Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan and now Lorenzo Pellegrini. Both the players would be a great addition to the squad.
But one answer everyone wants is, does Barcelona have the funds to make a signing? The club is under a huge debt but has also somehow got Messi to stay, and that could only have been possible if they promised to make some big signings and get themselves back on track to win silverware.
We all hope to see Barcelona back in action and challenging for the trophies as soon as possible, hopefully with Gundogan or Pellegrini in the squad.
