Newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona are looking to sign Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, as a long term-replacement for 31-year-old centre-back Gerrard Pique.
The Catalan outfit are keen on strengthening their back-line and will try to sign quite a few players at the end of the current campaign. With that said and done, manager Ernesto Valverde will want to bring in more stars to fortify his squad, as they will want to win the Champions League once again, after being knocked out of the competition by Serie A outfit AS Roma.
The World Cup-winning defender will turn 32 next year and the Blaugrana feel that it is high time to bring in a replacement for him. Alonso, who is quite versatile with his play, has previously featured at the centre of the defense during his time with Fiorentina in the Serie A.
He has been impressive in a wing-back role since his move to the Bridge back in August 2016 and earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year in 2017-18. Further, he is all set to join the Spanish national side for the World Cup in Russia and based on his current form, could be regularly part of the playing eleven as well.
This is one of the main reasons why he has caught the attention of a host of clubs across the European continent and now Barca want to add him to their squad as well. On the other hand, the Conte situation and Champions League football could play a key role as well in determining where the player eventually ends up.
It would be a huge loss for the Londoners to lose out on one of their top players this season, who has been really instrumental in helping them win some crucial fixtures this term. He has been in top form, due to which he is wanted by a host of clubs like Barcelona, who are determined to add him to their side.
Despite that, Chelsea will be keen to keep hold of him and ensure that he is at Stamford Bridge for the years to come, helping them win more silverware.
