Barcelona to target €70 million rated Premier League star next summer

Barcelona are reportedly considering a potential bid for a Premier League star, with reports floating around that he is unhappy at his current club.

The Brazilian made the summer transfer window his own personal soap opera, which dragged on for what seemed like weeks before he finally handed over a check for €222 million to Barcelona, despite reports of the La Liga ready to block the move. But everything went through and Neymar became the most expensive player in football history, annihilating the comparatively paltry sum of 90 million that Manchester United shelled out for Paul Pogba.

However, while Barcelona did bring in both Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, neither has managed to impress either the club or Ernesto Valverde. That’s exactly why the Catalan giants have targeted Antoine Griezmann, Marcus Rashford, Ryan Sessegnon and many others to try and replace Neymar’s goals. However, now reports are emerging from ESPN and the Daily Mail, that Barcelona are now tracking Anthony Martial as a potential target next summer.

The 22-year-old has been in brilliant form but has been largely limited to appearances off the bend under Mourinho. And with the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, and even Marcus Rashford, Martial finds himself at the bottom of the pecking order as a striker. Jose Mourinho has used the Frenchman sparingly and despite that, Anthony Martial has responded.

In 41 appearances, the France international has contributed to 21 goals and assists in a rather fruitful campaign for the Red Devils. However, with the France international’s contract running out in the summer of 2019, it’s said that any talks about a potential extension have come to a complete standstill. According to reports from the Metro and RMC, the 22-year-old and his agent have met with Manchester United in December of 2017, but with no response from the club.

Since the Chilean’s arrival in January, Martial has not found himself on the score-sheet and has gone on make only four starts, including defeats against both Newcastle United and Tottenham. Not only that reports have emerged that the former Monaco star is unhappy that he is being asked to play on the right wing to accommodate Sanchez. This has lead Anthony Martial to believe that this ardent lack of communication between both him and the Old Trafford side, has been a lack of recognition for the amount of progress the 22-year-old has made this season.

Author’s take:

The Frenchman’s style of play, combined with his searing pace and finishing ability has seen many compare him to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. However, if Manchester United are not interested in giving Anthony Martial a new extension, then make no mistake, there will be other suitors for the 22-year-old, given his age, talent, and style of play.
