The Catalans recently lost Lucas Digne, as the Frenchman decided to join Everton after two seasons in Spain. So the question is, who will replace the left-back in Valverde’s side?
It seems like the appointment of Eric Abidal as the Sporting Director has done wonders for Barcelona. The club has signed three new players so far and has also managed to balance the bank accounts with a few departures. After Paulinho, Lucas Digne has left the club and is headed to England in search of more game time.
The defender was Jordi Alba’s understudy for the last two seasons. He failed to book his ticket for the World Cup after just 14 appearances last season.
La Masia Product to replace Digne:
The Catalans have decided to bring the home-grown player in the first team to replace Digne, instead of making a new signing. Barca B’s Marc Cucurella is likely to be promoted to the senior side, after his two seasons for the B team. The Spaniard was initially set to be sent on a loan move but Digne’s departure has allowed Barcelona to keep him in Catalonia.
The 20-year old has been part of the famous La Masia academy since 2012. He is known for his pace and stamina on the left flank with both defensive and attacking instincts. Another academy player, Juan Miranda is also in the race to replace Digne, but he is yet to establish himself in the second string side. Both the players are currently in the USA for Barcelona’s pre-season friendlies and have been given regular game time to prove themselves.
With Cucurella being the favorite to be promoted, the 20-year old will be a second choice left-back behind Jordi Alba. The youngster will become the second player to be promoted in this summer, after the earlier addition of Carles Alena.
Barcelona will face AC Milan in their last pre-season friendly, before facing Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup.
All hail Abibal!
The Barca legend has done some amazing work as the club’s sporting director so far. And promoting Cucurella, a La Masia product will be definitely one of them. The Catalans were criticized for their extravagant spending in the last few years. But Abidal could rejuvenate the academy and bring back the golden Pep Guardiola era.
