Barcelona are looking for their next midfield superstar and it looks like their top target has admitted that he wants a move to the Camp Nou soon.
Replacing Andres Iniesta is the second hardest thing that Barcelona may ever have to do, with the first being replacing Lionel Messi. The Spaniard was a crucial part of some of the Camp Nou side’s greatest squads and made himself indispensable during his tenure with both Spain and Barcelona, before leaving for Japan.
Filling that gap, on the other hand, could be a task too much for Barcelona, despite the Catalan giants bringing in Philippe Coutinho, Arturo Vidal and Arthur Melo to ease the loss. However, that said manager Ernesto Valverde is certainly not happy and has decided to splurge a little further, targeting the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti, Paul Pogba, Frenkie De Jong and many others as potential choices.
However, if reports are to be believed then Ajax’s Frenkie De Jong is their top target for the winter and even the summer window If needed. The 21-year-old has been in stunning form and already been heavily linked with a move to either Real Madrid or even Barcelona. And with both fans and critics touting him as a potential replacement for Andres Iniesta, the Dutch starlet stayed at Ajax despite a potential move to looming during the summer window.
But now, it seems that the 21-year-old has changed his mind, with De Jong going on to say “If you end up in a club of a higher level, you will play with world-class players anyway. But I would really like to play with Messi someday. We were on vacation in Spain and my grandfather bought me Messi’s shirt with the 30, his shirt number then.
My grandfather knew that I liked Messi and I wore that shirt all the time. Of course I would like to play with him. He’s already 31, so I have to hurry up.”
This is a massive boost to Barcelona and their plans for the future, especially with various rumours floating about, that the Catalan giants board has already greenlighted a move for the youngster.
Frenkie De Jong is only 21 years old and still has time before a big move beckons him. While everyone can see the Dutch star’s potential, it’s his attitude that would make him a brilliant signing for Barcelona, not just his skill-set which as it happens would be perfect for Barcelona. Exactly someone the La Liga giants need as a long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta and given that De Jong’s only 21 years old, time is certainly on his side.
