Barcelona has failed to successfully replace Neymar Jr. after the Brazilian moved to Paris in the summer.

The move to bring back Gerard Deulofeu has not been successful and Barca’s record signing Ousmane Dembele is still recovering from the injury. But according to the reports in El Mundo Deportivo and Marca, the Catalan club has now shortlisted another Spaniard winger. Luis Alberto has been in a great form for Lazio and Barca’s sporting director Robert Fernandez is keeping an eye on the winger.

A product of Sevilla’s youth academy, Luis Alberto is familiar with the red and blue strips of FC Barcelona. The winger has spent his 2012-13 season at Barcelona B on loan from Sevilla. The youngster impressed at the Catalan club as he was the second top scorer for his team. But his time with Liverpool was far from impressive.

Signed by then manager Brendan Rodgers for just £7 million, the 20-year-old was seen as a raw talent who had immense potential. However, while the transaction has its risks, it soon showed why he was then marked as a risky buy. While Alberto did have the pace, skill and even the talent to operate across the attacking front line, he never managed to make his mark at Anfield eventually moving on loan to Malaga, an impressive stint at Deportivo La Coruna and before finally joining Lazio.

In the Serie A, Luis Alberto has shined, making 31 appearances for the club and scoring 6 goals, producing a further 10 assists. He was also a part of Lazio’s Supercoppa Italiana winning side which beat Juventus 2-3. The 25-year old has been in great form for the Italian side this season with 4 goals and 6 assists in Serie A. His performances also earned him a first international cap in November where he played last 16 minutes for La Roja.

Barcelona signed both Deulofeu and Dembele in the summer to strengthen the wings. But Deulofeu has scored just 1 goal so far and has fallen down the pecking order at the club. The Frenchman, Dembele injured his left leg in the very first La Liga start and is still recovering from the injury.

Author’s Take:

Barcelona needs a winger at any cost as Deulofeu has not taken his opportunities. And even after Dembele’s recovery, there should be someone to take the load off, Messi. Luis Alberto can be a great addition to the squad as he has the experience of playing with Barca’s mindset in the past.
