Eric has been linked with a return to the Catalan club for quite a long time now. And the soap opera surrounding his transfer was becoming a bit of regularity. Thankfully, all that is now almost at an end.
According to various reports in Spain, the player’s representatives have agreed on terms with Barca. However, official statements are yet to make.
Garcia’s contract with Manchester City runs out this summer. But Barcelona have been chasing the player ever since last August. The big push to sign Garcia, came after Bayern revealed the defensive incompetence of the squad in the Champions League. The disastrous 8-2 defeat pressed the club to look for quality defenders. And the name of the 20-year-old came up as the top priority.
The Catalans looked all set to secure his services. But Manchester City refused to let him go for a reduced transfer fee. They reportedly had demanded a transfer sum of £20 million for the Spaniard.
Such a fee looked impractical for a player who only had 1 year left on his contract. This delayed the move till the winter transfer window where Barca made a second attempt to swoop him. This time too, the Premier League club demanded £5 million for the player. Clearly not in a position to pay such a sum, the Presidential candidates decided to sign him for free.
Barcelona closing on Garcia deal:
With the player having clear intentions to play for Barca, it seemed only a matter of time. However, complications arose when President Joan Laporta decided to renegotiate his terms.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Laporta had offered Garcia half of what he was initially offered as salary. And that caused the deal to stumble temporarily.
But now, as it seems, only the final, minor details of the deal remain. Garcia has agreed to sacrifice half of the salary than what Bartomeu had previously offered him.
The Spaniard has made only 7 appearances in the 2020-21 season in all competitions for the Cityzens. But that is no reason to undermine his value or skills. Manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his admiration for the young gun several times.
Last week, after winning the Carabao Cup Final, Pep once again heaped praise on the player. He said that he would love to have 15 Eric Garcia’s in his team. Speaking with the journalists, Guardiola revealed, “He (Garcia) will go in an incredible team. I think with Eric, like most of the times, he is not on the bench or the team because he is going to Barcelona. I hope so.”
Eric is already well accustomed to the club. He is a product of Barcelona’s youth system before moving to England in 2017. The Spanish international already has 7 caps for his national team despite his tender age of 20. And the fans certainly expect a lot from him. For now, clues around the world wait in anticipation as the youngster prepares to return to his boyhood club.
