Barcelona target Brazilian startlet after Chelsea reject Willian bid

With Chelsea reportedly rejecting a potential deal for Willian, Barcelona has decided to go after another Brazilian star despite him agreeing to sign for another club.

Barcelona is looking for more goals, with manager Ernesto Valverde looking to reduce the pressure on both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. However, with the club letting Paulinho go after just one season at the Camp Nou, the Catalan giants have targeted another Brazilian star in Willian. But their deal for the 29-year-old has been rejected by Chelsea, which has left Barcelona reeling.

But in a rather dramatic twist, the La Liga giants have decided to go after 21-year-old Malcom from Bordeaux, despite the underlying fact that the Ligue 1 side has agreed to a £30 plus million deal for the youngster with AS Roma. The Ligue 1 side have reportedly reneged on their deal with the Serie A side, who have already signed the likes of Justin Kluivert, Javier Pastore, and many others this transfer window.

According to reports from Sky Sports, ESPN and Bleacher Report, the Catalan giants have reportedly offered Bordeaux a much better deal, with a higher transfer fee for the highly rated 21-year-old Brazilian winger. Malcom, who has just come off a fine season with the Ligue 1 side scoring 10 goals and assisting a further 7 last season, has been a target for the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and even Juventus at one stage.

It seems that Malcom is Valverde’s plan B, with Plan A being Willian and with Chelsea adamant to keep their Brazilian star, it looks like the 21-year-old could move to Barcelona. However, with Bordeaux releasing a statement about the transfer to AS Roma, Barcelona’s move and interest in the starlet has certainly complicated things.

The club statement by Bordeaux went on to say “FC Girondins de Bordeaux informs you that an agreement has been reached, subject to the signature of the administrative documents, with AS Roma for the transfer of Malcom.”

Author’s take:

Malcom is one for the future, and while he is yet to make a senior appearance for Brazil, even manager Tite believes that he along with a host of others, will lead to Brazil’s golden generation. But given that he’s only twenty-one years old, he does have time on his side. However, what needs to happen first is to decide which club will he join, Barcelona or AS Roma.
