Barcelona star threatens to quit the club amid interest from the Premier League

Barcelona talisman Samuel Umtiti has reportedly asked for a pay rise or he would threaten to leave the club.

The defender has played a vital role in Barcelona’s stunning season in which they’re yet to lose in the league. Since he signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2016, he has proved to be a highly valuable signing for the club and has cemented his place in the starting eleven. Stats show that even though he hasn’t contributed that much to goals, he has proved impenetrable at the back when it comes to aerial abilities.

The defender is reportedly growing frustrated with the club after not complying to his demands. On the contrary, his boss Valverde has insisted that Umtiti is happy to stay. “The player wants to leave. But he is happy here now”, he said.

Meanwhile, sources tell us that Barcelona has offered a contract worth similar to the one Manchester United are willing to pay him. Manchester United though have a selection headache as to who to pair up at the back. With Smalling, Jones and Rojo inconsistent and new signings Bailey and Lindelof yet to shine, they might be considering buying another center back.

United boss Mourinho meanwhile has given the club the green light to trigger Umtiti’s release clause. With Barcelona facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight, Umtiti may not be selected in the starting X1. Chelsea might fancy their chances without the rock-solid defender at the back.

And history favors them in this fixture to having not lost in 7 games against the Spanish giants. Barcelona will have to break history if they’re to progress to the quarters.

Author’s Take :

Barcelona won’t let go of Samuel Umtiti that easily, especially given his age and the fact that his skills will only grow with time. And with reports telling us that he has been offered a new contract, he is probably here for a long time to stay. But despite that, as of right now his release clause is still easily within reach for Manchester United and any other club that is interested in him.
