Luis Suárez is reportedly ahead of schedule in his efforts to return from a serious knee injury.
Suarez picked up a serious knee injury back against Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Spanish Supercopa. Suarez featured in 23 games for the Blaugrana this season prior to his injury scoring 14 goals. Initial reports suggested that the 32-year-old would miss the rest of the season with his injury.
Uruguayan’s absence has been very noticeable in Barca’s matches post his injury. The Blaugrana miss the number 9 figure in front of goal both in goals scored and the generation of chances. Barcelona tried to sign a replacement for the 32-year-old during the winter transfer window without any success.
Suarez will reportedly be back in time for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona was expected to face serious problems with Ousmane Dembele also ruled out with a ruptured hamstring. Barca have been looking at the transfer window to sign an emergency forward with the Frenchman out for six months. The latest reports on Luis Suarez, however, could provide a massive boost for the Catalan club.
The Uruguayan striker is reportedly recovering well from his injury after undergoing surgery recently. Goal report that Suarez is already walking normally and has passed a medical review with positive results. The report states that the 32-year-old could be fit for the Champions League semi-finals if Barcelona makes it that far.
That timeline would also see Suarez fit in time to feature in Barca’s last four league fixtures of their campaign. Barcelona will host Espanyol and Osasuna at the Camp Nou in two out of their five league fixtures in May. They will also face Villarreal, Real Valladolid, and Alaves away from home the same month.
Suarez’s early return might prove critical for Barca in La Liga’s title chase should it come to fruition. The defending champions are three points behind league leaders Real Madrid in the La Liga table. The Catalan club will have Suarez available for clashes with Espanyol, Real Vallodolid, Osasuna and Alaves if he continues his recovery as scheduled.
