Barcelona president reveals meeting Superstar Forward’s agent

Barcelona chief Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted that they tried to engage with the agent of Rojiblancos star as speculations of a transfer continue to mushroom

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed that he met Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann’s agent last year, but refused to divulge anything more. The Frenchman has been a subject of massive speculation that he would be joining Barcelona soon, and the club might launch a bid in the summer. A sensational £88 million switch appeared to be on the cards, but Bartomeu appeared to play it all down.

“We don’t talk of players from other teams. We’re analysing the season and what we’ll do with the signings and departures,” he said while in an interview with Spanish radio. “I saw Griezmann one day on holiday. I haven’t spoken with him this year. We have a relationship with his representative like we have with other representatives,” he further added.

Bartomeu then went to promulgate about meetings with Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo and chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and discussing several issues, without delving any deeper into the conversation. He said, “We’ve talked with Cerezo and Gil Marin about many things. The relationship between the clubs is good. But it’s not the moment to talk about these matters. You cannot talk about players who play at other clubs.”

Griezmann is widely touted to join Barcelona if a move is made official. But for now, the club president has chosen to keep things under a wraps.

Author’s Take

Griezmann could be a great fit at Barcelona, but the squad is so packed to the rafters with talents that they don’t need to splash another oodles of cash on him. And even if he does arrive, manager Valverde would have the travails of reworking his strategies so as to fit him and all else in the team.
