Barcelona’s plans for a rebuild have taken them on a rather irregular tour of Europe. On their list are several young as well experienced players that they consider worthy of donning the Barcelona crest.
Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay of Lyon have been on their radar for a long time. Both Dutch players are considered favourites of Koeman after the manager’s brief stint with them at the National Camp.
Barcelona have been chasing the players ever since last summer. But their transfer fees posed a major problem in the way of their arrivals at the Camp Nou.
However, at least that part no longer presents a threat to the Blaugrana’s intentions of landing them in the summer. The contracts of both the players run out soon, at the end of next month rather.
While Wijnaldum has already decided that he longer wants to continue at Liverpool, Depay is yet to reveal anything. But reports have indeed surfaced claiming that the Dutch forward is intent on moving to a bigger club. The financial woes of Barcelona are well documented. Gross outstanding debt of 1.2 billion euros has forced the club to look for cheaper options on the market.
And right now, free agents seem to be their only source of inbound transfers. To that end, several other names have also emerged with Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia’s signing already being officially announced.
Depay and Wijnaldum are both close to putting pen to paper with Barcelona as well but nothing is finalised yet. And Frenkie De Jong has kicked off controversies regarding their transfer to his club.
Does Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong know about the transfers?
Speaking in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad, the young holding midfielder, on being asked about his Netherlands teammates, said, “Wijnaldum and Depay? It remains to be seen what they do. I don’t know how serious it is. Or maybe I do, but then I don’t tell [LAUGHS].”
This comment has raised eyebrows among the fans. Clearly, De Jong is aware of the ongoing scenes behind the curtains. But then again, as a professional, he does not really have the right to reveal any transfers before they happen.
Barcelona’s problems up front in the attacking sector is clear as daylight. The club has gone an entire season without playing a proper out-and-out striker in their line-up.
After they offloaded Luis Suarez, Martin Braithwaite was the only number 9 option left at Koeman’s disposal. And the Danish forward simply lacks enough calibre to play for a club of such stature despite all his professionalism.
This has led President Laporta to go all out for a player who can be effective in front of the goal. And Depay seems to be the ideal fit given the current conditions. As for Wijnaldum, his experience may provide a good rotational option for Sergio Busquets who is not getting any younger. Either way, it looks like the Catalans are all set to make some big signings this summer. And De Jong’s cheeky hint might just have confirmed that.
