Barcelona is looking to land the Lazio defender for free in this summer transfer window
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb reports that Barcelona is looking to land Lazio star this transfer window. They have already held talks with the player’s representatives.
The Catalans are all set to land Eric Garcia from Manchester City. However, it looks like Koeman’s defensive recruitments will not end there. And now, reports indicate that the club is trying to sign Luiz Felipe from Lazio.
The club’s representatives have already met with Luiz’s agents last week in Spain. And they are taking it seriously, judging by their current defensive woes.
One of the primary reasons why Barca have chosen the Brazilian is because of his age. The defender is just 24 of years age and Barcelona may consider him as a long-term investment.
His agent, Stefano Castagna has already discussed initial terms with the club. However, the transfer fee may pose a problem for Barca. In which case, they might look to sign him for free next summer, in 2022.
Luiz arrived at Italy in 2016 from Brazilian side Ituano. He has so far amassed 99 career appearances for Lazio.
The youngster is yet to receive his senior national team call up. But he has already made his debut for Brazil’s U-20 and U-23 sides. And the club is convinced that he may have a promising career ahead of him.
Is Barcelona’s interest in the player justified?
Barcelona have been looking to strengthen their defensive department for a long time now. They only stepped it up after their disastrous 8-2 defeat last season exposed the lapses more clearly than ever.
To that end, the club has found many of its answers in its B team and academy graduates. With Oscar Mingueza and Ronald Araujo stepping up, their defensive lapses have reduced considerably.
Add to that Ronald Koeman’s switch to a 3 center-back system, Barca look more solid that they had in their last campaign. However, there is still room for improvements.
Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti have been highly inconsistent this season. While
Lenglet has still managed to pull off some decent performances, Umtiti is just a shadow of his former self. He is expected to leave the club at the end of this season.
As a result, Barcelona’s top brass have started looking outside of the club for replacements. To that end, they had already identified Eric Garcia of Manchester City. And after months of drama and delay, he seems finally set to arrive at the Camp Nou.
However, manager Koeman wants another quality addition to his defensive line-up. And the name of the 24-year-old, Luiz Felipe has emerged.
But the deal is far from complete, and the upcoming months will reveal how the deal will take shape. As of now, all the fans can do, is wait.
