Barcelona have been revealed to have weighed up options of bringing the Bayern midfielder back to the Catalan capital, but he later penned a new deal
Barcelona had reportedly mulled over bringing Thiago Alcantara back to the Camp Nou. It’s alleged that Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez met the player in Paris where he played in Spain’s friendly game against France. The two discussed the midfielder’s possible return to the Catalan capital. But with nothing affirmed in the meeting, Alcantara would go on to sign a new deal with Bayern that runs til 2021.
The 27-year old has been a regular at Bayern since jumping ships back in 2013. And his latest deal all but ends any prospect of a sensational return to his boyhood club. But it’s also believed that Alcantara doesn’t completely rule out a return and does still hold Barcelona in his heart.
The reports also come at a time when his brother, Rafinha, is also a subject of a return to the Camp Nou. Currently on loan at Inter Milan, the 25-year old has been linked with a return to Barcelona next season, but may rather opt to stay with the Nerazzurri given the first-team opportunities he enjoys there.
The Alcantara brothers are terrific players and having some of the best times of their career with their respective teams at the moment. Any talk of a return appears futile and inconsequential, given the compact squad Barcelona have. Even if they’re flirting with a mass exodus in the summer to clear out a few dead weeds, the Alcantaras might still be second-fiddle in the team, given the new arrivals.
