The Catalan giants are currently under big pressure after failing to produce their usual impressive football this season. Barcelona are going through transition under Dutch manager Ronald Koeman, who’s quite struggling at Camp Nou.
The current season of Barcelona is a worry for fans as the club isn’t performing to their potential. Barca is out of top four positions in the current league standings with 28 points from 16 games, while rivals Real Madrid is at second position with 36 points.
However, Barcelona is unbeaten in their last six games in La Liga. Koeman’s side enjoyed a victory over Huesca to seal all three points with Messi back in their side.
Messi’s return to the side did help the visitors against Huesca to clinch victory. Messi produced an inch-perfect cross acknowledging De Jong’s run in to the box. The Dutch midfielder made no mistake to head the ball in to the net past Alvaro Fernandez.
The Catalan club will need reinforcements to achieve a silverware this term after a slow start to the season. Meanwhile, the management still wants to finish the unfinished business, which wasn’t able to be completed in the summer window.
According to Sky Sports, Barcelona are keen to secure the services of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, Manchester City defender Eric Garcia and Lyon forward Memphis Depay on free transfers. All the three player’s contracts are set to expire by end of the season.
‘January Bargains Deals’ for Barcelona?
The Spanish club is in need of reinforcements at the moment, especially in the middle. With the Dutch manager not a big fan of Riqui Puig and Carlos Alena, Barcelona is short of midfielders in the squad. Both Spanish players are rumored to be loaned out this January.
However, Puig wants to stay at Camp Nou and fight for his place amidst a number of top-flight clubs after him for his signature. While, Alena has interests from Italy and a number of Spanish sides, who are ready to sign him on a loan deal.
The new signings will be key for Barcelona this term, however, Barca are not expected to make any new additions until the outcome of the presidential election on January 24. The election will mean a scramble to try and land any of these targets in the final days of the window.
The board will also try to convince Messi to stay at Camp Nou, whose contract runs out by end of this season. Lionel Messi can now talk with foreign clubs like Man City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are interested in his services. Messi has said he will wait until the end of the season to decide his future. He wants to wait for the outcome of the election and listen to the new president’s ideas.
Koeman’s request for a new number nine
Ronald Koeman placed his request to the club to prioritize for a new ‘number nine’ on Sunday. The club will go for Depay, whose contract ends by June 2021, however, he’s a winger, who occasionally plays at the striker role. Barcelona has been playing with Martin Braithwaite and Griezmann upfront since, Suarez’s departure.
Braithwaite hasn’t been effective for the Catalans, which is a worry for the fans as well. “I trust each player in our squad,” Koeman told reporters. “But if we choose to have three midfielders there is room for three forwards.
“With Leo we bet on someone with great depth like Dembele, and we have to choose between Martin or Antoine at the top and Martin has done it. It’s a nine that we’re missing in these games but it doesn’t mean anything in regards to Antoine’s substitution. We have a lot of games and we need all the players.
“We have said several times, at the beginning of the season, that we need someone at the top to have more competition and more goals, more effectiveness, but this depends on many things.”
