Barcelona agree deal with superstar midfielder

Barcelona has a big void to fill in after Andres Iniesta’s departure to South East Asian club Vissel Kobe. They have agreed to a deal for this superstar who will be Iniesta’s best successor.

Barcelona has been hunting the transfer market for a replacement for Andres Iniesta. Among a number of players linked with a move to Barcelona, Paul Pogba was ther primary target. Unfortunately, Barcelona’s attempt to land the World Cup winner has fallen flat. His current owners Manchester United were unwilling to talk about a deal with Barcelona having signed the midfielder on an 89 million pound fee just two years back. Manchester United was also furious at Barcelona’s audacity to discuss a major deal with just two days left for them to look at replacements.

The Spanish champions made an offer worth 45 million pounds plus two players that were Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina, for Pogba. Jose Mourinho did not feel the offer valuable and outright rejected the Camp Nou outfit’s bid. As a result, Barcelona has agreed to a principle deal with Ajax Amsterdam for Frenkie de Jong.

The Eredivisie side and Barcelona agreed upon a conditional offer that would see de Jong move to Spain, should the Dutch giants fail to seal UEFA Champions League qualification, as per Marc Overmars. Ajax is still alive in the Champions League and will play a game against Standard Liege in the competition’s third qualifying round.

The sides drew 2-2 in the first leg, but have two away goals in the bag. If a positive result comes at the Amsterdam Arena, they will face a final two-legged playoff against either Slavia Prague or Dynamo Kyiv. The deal for De Jong that currently stands a 50-50 chance of being successful is likely to cost Barcelona 41 million pounds.

Barcelona has already signed Arthur and Malcom this summer and held onto Ousmane Dembele’s services amid transfer rumours. Meanwhile, Clement Lenglet and Arturo Vidal have also been recruited by Ernesto Valverde.

Author’s Take

Barcelona signing Frenkie De Jong for 41 million pounds could prove to be a great bargain if the 21-year-old can deliver. Ajax has been the development home for many stars like Luis Suarez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Frenkie De Jong will be hoping to have a career as illustrious as the two.
