Atletico Madrid ready to sell Chelsea and Manchester United targets

TMT

Atletico Madrid are currently in a rebuilding phase. Diego Simone is ready to allow some of the players to leave the club in order to raise funds. This has resulted in an opportunity for clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United. The Premier League duo have an interest in players of the Spanish club. Currently, Chelsea are chasing the top four, and Manchester United are comfortable in second place. Both of them are also in a phase of rebuilding themselves. El Larguero has reported that many first-team players will leave the club.

Chelsea target Atletico Madrid defender:

The Blues have been linked with a move to sign Jose Gimenez in the past as well. However a move never really materialised. The Uruguayan has a release clause of $120 million. Gimenez grew up as a Chelsea fan as well and previously he has expressed his desire to play with Frank Lampard.

While Lampard is no longer the club manager but Stamford Bridge should still be an attractive destination for him. Under Thomas Tuhcel, Chelsea have been more defensive than offensive. It is unclear whether he will continue with this approach in the long term or not. But there is no doubt that they are in need of a new defender.

There has been interest from other clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal as well. However, the Blues are said to be tracking him since 2016. It is still unclear what kind of money, Los Colchoneros will demand him. In recent years they have shown that they are tough negotiators.

Why Chelsea want Jose Gimenez? And potential alternatives:

At the age of 26, he is one of the best young defenders in world football. This season he has made 26 appearances in all competitions. The Uraguan’s dribbled past per game is only 0.3 and 1.1 interceptions per game. To put in perspective both Sergio Ramos and Varane have a dribbled past per game of 0.3. Such stats are one of the reasons why Chelsea wants to sign him.

However, it is possible that the Blues might not be able to sign him. Thus they will have to stay prepared to sign his alternatives as well. Jules Kounde of Sevilla is also a target for Chelsea. He is a young player age of 22. Declan Rice has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. He is also capable of playing as a centre-back.

Manchester United to strenghten the midfield:

The Red Devils have been previously linked with a move to sign Saul Niguez. He has been a key player for Diego Simone since breaking into the first team. This season he has made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.

At one point in time, he was also considered to be a replacement for Paul Pogba. The Frenchman has been constantly linked with a move away from the club. Manchester United are not the only club that has shown interest in signing the Spanish midfielder.

Bayern Munich have also been linked with a move to sign him. This season he has made 0.5 key passes per game and 0.6 dribbles per game. Transfermarkt has valued him around $60 million. Though both Manchester United and Bayern Munich will find it difficult to pay this amount.

Should Manchester United sign Saul ?

Though the Red Devils were interested in him but it might not be the right decision to sign him. The times ahead will be tough financially due to coronavirus. Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s side will have to invest wisely. They already have Fred and McTominnay in the squad. While in the attacking department as well they have Fernandes, Pogba, and Van de Beek.

Thus it would not be a good decision to sign him. The Spaniard will be an expensive player, they already have players similar to him. This season he has only scored two goals and no assists. It would be better if they try to sign someone like Denis Zakaria.

12th Man Opinion

Chelsea are in clear need of a centre-back but Gimmenz has struggled with injuries. Not only this they already have Fikayo Tomori and Malang Saar as well. As Manchester United, they should focus more on signing a centre-back, striker and a right-winger.
