Blow for Barcelona, as Atletico Madrid take steps to ensure Antoine Griezmann stays

The French superstar has been constantly linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid but they are keen for him to stay.

The Rojiblancos have taken it on themselves to convince their talisman, Antoine Griezmann, to extend his stay. The Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo have stated that the current Europa League holders are working on transfers which would allow the team to compete with the Real Madrid and Barcelona, thereby convincing the forward to snub any interests from rivals.

Will they be at Atletico Madrid next season?

The club has decided to provide Diego Simeone with the AS Monaco duo, Thomas Lemar and Djibril Sidibe, in order to improve the squad and the chance to win further silverware. Lemar, who was subject to a late bid by Arsenal, has not been able to replicate his title-winning standards last season but will be a good replacement for the departed Yannick Carrasco while Sidibe will take some burden off the ageing Juanfran.

Lemar has been putting up similar numbers to Koke and had been better than the other attackers like Saul and Correa considering it being a less fruitful season of the Monaco man.

It has also been revealed that Griezmann will be deservedly made the team’s top earner, which is a positive not only for the player but also for the fans who will be pleased by the club’s ambition. The mercurial attacker scored 29 and set up 13 as the side finished only behind Barcelona in the league and went all the way in the Europa league after an unsuccessful effort to get out of their Champions league group.

El Pupas also witnessed a forging bond between Griezmann and the returning Diego Costa. With the attacker revealing that his future will be sorted before the World Cup, after the friendly with USA, the fans will be hoping to see him at Wanda Metropolitano next season.

Author’s take-

Griezmann has been absolutely scintillating for the red and whites and is an integral part of the squad. Quality recruitment, like Lemar, and a higher pay might just be enough to convince the player to stay. But with a release clause as unsubstantial as 100 million Euros for a player of his quality, you are sure to attract the big boys who, as the history suggests, will end up getting the favourable deal.
