In what might be one of the most unanticipated moves ever, Mikel Arteta might consider sacrificing their hottest academy product, Bukayo Saka to fund the transfer plans for Arsenal. The Gunners are planning a complete overhaul to challenge for the League title.
The 19-year-old English winger has been a Gunner since birth. He entered the Arsenal Youth program and was given his professional contract at the age of 17. Saka featured for the U-23 side before getting the taste of the 1st team.
He made his 1st team debut in 2018 in the Europa League. He also made his Premier League debut in his breakthrough season. His career got highlighted when he started playing regularly in the 2019-20 season. His progress was promising enough for Arteta to bestow him with higher responsibilities.
Although a winger, he was given more role as a left-back after Sead Kolašinac and Kieran Tierney got injured. Since then he has also established himself in that position. That season he made 38 appearances and scored 4 goals. His incredible season rewarded him with the third position in Arsenal’s Player of the Year Award.
The current season has been continuing his form and has cemented his place in the squad. Last month he made his 50th appearance for the club. In doing so, he also became the 2nd youngest Arsenal player to achieve that milestone.
Arsenal are currently 9th in the Premier League. They were off to a disastrous start but have balanced themselves to stay on the upper half of the table. They are 9 points from a Champions League zone and 7 points from a Europa League spot.
Desperate measures call for desperate moves for Arsenal:
Grabbing a European spot from the league looks difficult. However, they can jump directly into the Champions League if they win the Europa League this season. They will play Slavia Praha in the quarter-finals.
Mikel Arteta’s plans for the overhaul also have requirements. Arsenal have always been careful with funding as not featuring in the Champions League for a while has diminished it. Arsenal will have to win the Europa League, which if they fail will hamper the transfer plans immensely. According to The Times, a place outside the top-6 in the League will shrink their bank.
A right-back, centre-back, and midfielder are what Arteta has seen that requires improvement. They have also contacted players with whom they are said to be closing the deals.
Martin Odegaard who is currently on loan from Real Madrid has been impressive and the coach has made his permanent move a priority. They are hoping for a bid of around £35million to seal the deal.
But if they fail to secure a European spot, the required signings cannot be made and different options will be considered. Around 10 players have been transfer-listed to fund the incoming players. After Mikel Arteta took over, the transfer windows have always been busy, with the next one also looking similar.
Selling an academy player who has been tagged as one of the upcoming talents is definitely a foolish move. Even the manager who has high praises for the kid knows that. But, this move will only be regarded as a desperate remedy. The talented youngster can raise a huge amount and the move might be considered if Arsenal fails to secure the European spots and if they fail to secure funds after selling their fringe players.
