Arsenal won’t pay £50m for defender but keeping a tab on other options

Arsenal’s defense has been under scrutiny for a long time. Umtiti is linked to a move to Emirates for the last two years.

One of the key tasks for new manager Mikel Arteta is to improve the defensive aspect of the squad. Arsenal was reported to looking sign Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona for quite some time now. Umtiti has been struggling with injuries and hasn’t been able to command enough game time with Clement Lenglet performing well. With all of that going on a move to the Premier League might be on the cards.

But according to a report from The Mirror Mikel Arteta’s hopes of luring the World cup winner to Arsenal have hit a bedrock. According to a report from the Sport, the youngster plans to stay at Barcelona if possible, while Barcelona is looking to cash in on him. Barcelona has asked for a price of £50 million for Umtiti but the Gunners are not willing to pay that much. Arsenal has been linked with various other players but it seems Samuel Umtiti’s name is off the list.

Furthermore, according to The Mirror, Umtiti would prefer heading to Chelsea. But Chelsea too is reluctant to pay his buy out the value of £50 million. Chelsea has rather set their sights on Gabriel Magalhaes of Lille and plans to lure the youngster to Stamford Bridge.

Other Prospects to link up with Saliba

Arsenal has signed William Saliba from Saint-Étienne on loan with an option for signing him in the future. But that won’t be enough. Arsenal is still looking for more reinforcements.

Arsenal have backed out of Samuel Umtiti transfer due to asking price and his injury risk. But they are still keeping tabs on other defenders to pair with Saliba. Arsenal is scouting four defenders as per various reports.

1) Jonathan Tah

Jonathan Tah plays for Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The German international is a key part of the infrastructure at Leverkusen and played a pivotal role in Bayern Leverkusen’s push for the 4th place spot. According to SportBild, the Gunners are interested in bring Tah to the Emirates.

2) Pau Torres

Paul Torres plays at center Back for Villarreal and is an exciting prospect. He has played in every match for Villarreal this season. According to a report from 90min Arsenal is planning to sign the player next summer. He has a transfer clause between  €50 to  €75 million. Arsenal is positive they are front runners in the race despite the interest of other rivals. Although whether they will spend such a big amount or not is a matter of doubt.

3) Unai Nunez

Unai Nunez plays for Athletic Bilbao and has also made appearances for the Spanish senior team. He has proved his mettle against some of the best forwards in the league.

According to Deia, Nunez has replaced his agent with ambitions to venture into European Leagues and Arsenal could be his final destination. The 23-year-old has a release clause of €30 million which would within the Gunners budget.

4) Dayot Upamecano

The Frenchman has been a key part of Leipzig’s performance in the Champions League as has attracted interest from PSG and Barcelona.
Upamecano has stated a desire for a move to the Premier League giving a huge boost to Arsenal looking for reliable defenders. He runs out of his current contract next year and could be seen heading to the Emirates.
Upamecano has also told RB Leipzig his intention to move away, which makes the move to Emirates even more likely.
