Large numbers of players have been linked with the Gunners in this transfer window. The club is on the verge of announcing two new signings however they aren’t headline material plainly speaking. One big target for Arsenal would be Andre Onana.
The Gunners did not have a very good season last year. Many of the veterans in Arsenal’s ranks are plotting an exit. Granit Xhaka looks set for a move to Roma whereas Hector Bellerin and Bernd Leno have also expressed desires to leave.
Bernd Leno recently spoke in an interview about the situation. There are rumors building up of him leaving however the player has insisted otherwise. “I don’t want to flee here, I feel good and want to be successful again with Arsenal!
Arsenal are a big club, which is extremely underestimated in Germany, there are many Arsenal fans all over the world,” he said in an interview with German publication Sport 1. “I still have a two-year contract and hope to play in the Champions League again with Arsenal.”
It seems like Leno has no intention to leave immediately. But he may look to do so after the expiry of his contract. Andre Onana would be a good option for replacing him in such a case. There is also an age gap of 4 years between the 2 players.
However, there are some factors because of which the Gunners are hesitant and are looking toward players who have Premier League experience like Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone. Arsenal’s reluctance could open up the doors for Lyon to sweep in.
Arsenal backing off could open the doors for Lyon to sign Andre Onana:
Andre Onana was one of the top prospects of the game before the incident which cast a shadow on his career. He was found guilty of having an illegal substance in his body because of which he was handed a 12 months ban, however it was later cut down to 9 months.
Onana described it as an accident but he got the punishment anyway. As a result, he will not be able to play till November. He can return to training with the club by September. The player wants to leave amidst interest from Germany and England.
According to French publication L’Equipe, Lyon are taking an interest in Onana’s availability. Because of all the drama associated with the player his transfer value can be as less as £10 to £15m. At that price, it certainly will be a bargain for any club.
Another big plus in Lyon’s favour is that Peter Sylvester Bosz has managed Onana in the past. The 25-year-old could welcome a reunion with his former boss. Onana has entered the last year of his contract with Ajax.
The club will want to sell him either in this window or the next one as the last thing they would want would be Onana leaving as a free agent. Although the player is out of touch but he still is a sensational talent.
Arsenal might yet decide to launch an official bid for the Goalkeeper. Although he won’t be available for the majority of this season, in the long term Onana can be a very good replacement for Bernd Leno whenever he decides to leave.
