Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta aims to bring in reinforcements in the defensive areas monitoring Ajax’s full-back.
Arsenal has put on a show in defense after Arteta became the interim boss. Unai Emery’s Arsenal put on one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League. The statistics were so bad that it led him to reshuffle his defense line but it was useless. They recorded 13.1 shots conceded per game average in the 2018-19 season.
Surprisingly, they performed worse as they ranked 17 shots conceding per game mid-season on average. During Emery’s 15 games in charge at London in the 2019-20 season, the team kept 1 clean sheet and conceded 28 goals.
After Emery got sacked, the Gooners rejoiced Mikel Arteta’s appointment. The Spanish manager gained a lot of experience under tactical genius Pep Guardiola. Arteta made an instant impact on the squad upon his arrival. There prevailed a winning mentality and the team showed much more effort on the pitch.
Joining in the middle of the running season, Arteta had limited options to better the team. His take on the defense was slightly complicated in the beginning. He experimented with a couple of formation changes with 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2.
Arteta used his defender to press harder and maintain a strict line of defense. Under him, the north London outfit kept 7 clean sheets and concede 12 goals in his 15 games in charge.
The tactics the Spaniard used developed gradually but his winter signings proved a major setback. Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares hardly have had their time on the pitch. Arsenal signed Cedric even though he was in injury. Mari is young and is yet to prove his worth.
Arteta must make the most of this summer transfer window to bolster his left-back position. Reports suggest that he has shortlisted and scouted Ajax’s Tagliafico as a potential addition for the squad.
How Tagliafico will better Arsenal’s defence?
According to the Mirror, Arsenal is in the pursuit of Ajax’s left-back Tagliafico. The 27-year-old Argentine was a crucial part of the Ajax side that made it to the semifinals of Champions League last year.
He also impressed with his performances this season with 5 goals and 7 assists. Reports suggest he is going to move away from Ajax with top European clubs monitoring him.
Arsenal could not find the solutions to their left-back position eve after signing Tierney. The 22-year-old full-back has only featured in 11 games and is doubtful owing to his fitness issues. Comparatively, Tagliafico is a nice option to vouch for. He is experienced enough and can provide a robust outlook to Arsenal’s ailing defense.
Also, Tagliafico’s transfer to the North London outfit will help Bukayo Saka play in his original attacking position. His £20 million valuations is comparatively cheap and affordable for Arsenal. The Gunners are competing with Chelsea, United, and Barcelona for the Argentine’s signature.
