The Gunners have been defensively weak this season, conceding the most amount of goals among the top six, and Arsenal has finally decided to do something about that.
This season was supposed to be a do-over after 2016/17’s miserable fifth place finish but nothing has changed for Arsenal. While Arsene Wenger has announced his departure at the end of the season from a club that he has steadily led into the unknown future, the Gunners look worse for wear at the end of the legendary Premier League manager’s incredible tenure. However, what’s worse is the fact in Arsene Wenger’s last season; Arsenal will not make the top four and have struggled to win an away game in 2018.
That’s exactly why; the Arsenal board and their recruitment staff have decided to target reinforcements in defense, with the club targeting the likes of Jerome Boateng, Clement Lenglet, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and many others to bring in. However, it looks like thanks to Sven Mislintat’s connection to the Bundesliga and Borussia Dortmund, 29 years old Greek international makes the cut above the rest. According to reports from the Telegraph, the Greek international is a prime target for the Premier League giants
With Arsenal looking to bring in new leaders and experienced defenders, the Colossus of Borussia Dortmund as the Bundesliga has called him would be perfect for the team. Not only that Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi have identified problem areas, that includes a new goalkeeper and two new defenders among others. Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak has made the cut, along with Stoke City star Jack Butland and Roma man Alisson Becker with Arsenal looking to replace the 36-year-old Petr Cech.
Not only that, the Gunners are also chasing after Alex Sandro, David Alaba and Ricardo Rodriguez among others, with Arsenal looking for replacements for the aging yet consistent Nacho Monreal. The Spaniard is already 32 years old and nearing the end of his career in football, and former Schalke man Sead Kolasinac, while already a cult hero has struggled in recent times to replace Monreal.
Arsenal need a new defensive line to complement their forwards, especially if they keep conceding goals like the way they are right now. Both Laurent Koscienly and Shkrodan Mustafi haven’t been at their very best this season, while Petr Cech is growing older and older day by day.
