Arsenal signing this experienced 29-year-old Spanish star would be a useful move for Arteta

Arsenal could re-consider a move for Levante UD goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez in the future. In order to rejuvenate the squad at Emirates. As per the reports from AS (h/t Football London), Levante UD goalkeeper himself revealed about the avid interest Arsenal has for himself. Moreover, the Gunners also initiated the transfer talks with the Spanish side.

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal wanted to sign a replacement for Emiliano Martinez and a second fiddle for Bern Leno. Later on, Martinez made a switch to Aston Villa for a regular game time while the Gunners signed Runar Alex Runarsson.

At the end of the previous campaign, Aitor Fernandez was also linked with a move away from the Levante. This has led to various clubs making an approach for the 29-year old shot stopped during the summer transfer window.

The Spanish player has revealed that both Arsenal as well as Athletic Club made an approach for his signature. However, Fernandez eventually decided to stay with Levante due to the love and support he enjoys from the fanbase.

Aitor Fernandez’s journey so far as a player.

The 29-year old is a product of Athletic Bilbao academy. After spending four years in youth setup since joining it in 2003. He received his promotion to the U-19s. Past one season, he moved to CD Basconia for further growth as a player. After his return, he was promoted to the Bilbao ‘B’ team. He made 30 appearances on all the B teams and was sent to Barakaldo CF.

On making a return from his loan spell, he joined Villarreal on free. There he received the promotion to their B side. He made around 100 appearances for the club while keeping 34 clean sheets. He remained with Villareal for three and a half seasons before moving to CD Numancia.

Fernandez stayed with CD Numancia for two years and left the club in 2018 for Levante. So far, he has appeared in 65 games, keeping 8 clean sheets for Paco Lopez’s side (source – Transfermarkt).

The Spanish goalkeeper has three more years in his contract to run down. Fernandez has retained his reputation as one of the best and most consistent shot-stoppers in the Spanish top flight. Even though he has played youth football for Spain. But he is yet to receive a call from the senior side.

How Aitor Fernandez would help Arsenal?

Emiliano Martinez finished off the previous campaign very strongly, gathering praises and assisting Arsenal in two major wins. After a successful season-ending Martinez was ready to compete with Arsenal No. 1 goalkeeper Bernd Leno for the current season.

But as soon as the German gained his full fitness he was given the number one spot. Whereas Martinez was sidelined as usual. In order to get regular playtime, he left Arsenal in the transfer window.

Moreover, Arsenal’s new signing deputy signing Alex Runarsson is a good young keeper who doesn’t look like someone able to give fair competition to Bernd Leno for a regular number 1 spot. For this, the Gunners would need someone like Aitor Fernandez as he perfectly fits the shoes.

The Spaniard will not only bring valuable experience to Arsenal but also he would compete with Bernd Leno for the regular spot. Thus Arsenal must revisit their interest in Fernandez in the upcoming transfer window.
