Arsenal on the verge of signing 22-year-old midfield destroyer

Emery Arsenal Torreira

Arsenal are close to finalising a deal for Uruguay’s midfield phenomenon Lucas Torreira

The Gunners’ transfer window has had a steady, if not an emphatic, start. Arrivals of Stephan Lichsteiner and Sokratis Papastathapolous (yet to be announced) will act as solid additions to the squad. Both the defenders will add a much-needed cover and experience at the back for Arsenal. Young Turkish centre-half Caglar Soyuncu remains another on Unai Emery and Sven Mislintat’s hitlist. However, Arsenal’s third signing could very well be the most important as reports in Italy are claiming that Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira is ‘very close’ to completing a move to the Emirates.

Both Di Marzio and Sky Italy are claiming that Arsenal are willing to pay Torreira’s relatively modest €25 million buyout clause. However, the same sources also report that the Gunners face strong competition from Napoli who are bracing themselves for Jorginho’s departure. The Partenopei see Torreira as the perfect replacement for the Italian national.

Meanwhile, the player himself has hinted at a potential move to the Emirates by dropping the usual hints on social media. He followed Arsenal and Mesut Ozil on Instagram exciting the fans at the prospect of a potential arrival.

Torreira, on the other hand, will be a welcome addition to Emery’s midfield which recently lost the services of Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard returned to Villareal after an injury-ravaged last 36 months in London. Jack Wilshere’s future remains uncertain and Aaron Ramsey, too, is stalling on committing his future to the Gunners. If this deal falls through, the Arsenal manager is also keen on bringing in Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi and Marouane Fellaini, recently released by Manchester United.

Author’s Take

Torreira will be the perfect signing for Arsenal. He will add a much-needed bite to this ‘soft’ Gunners side while his passing ability will make sure that he does not seem out of place in the midfield. Now it’s up to the Arsenal officials to get the deal done as soon as they can.
