Arsenal were lagging behind the rest of the big six in the first half of the season. Mikel Arteta was having a tough period with his squad’s lack of creative play in the center of the park. However, the addition of Emile Smith Rowe to his lineup has made a huge difference recently.
Since his addition, Emile Smith Rowe has been able to add more creativity to Arsenal’s midfield. The youngster has made just five Premier League appearances so far. The North London side have won four and settled for a draw in the past five games. The youngster himself has three assists to his name in these five appearances.
This has helped the Gunners bounce back into the top-four chase in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta is relieved to see his squad find their sync after a series of miserable performances. The Spanish manager was keen to sign some creative playmakers in the previous transfer window. But the financial crisis at Arsenal held his transfer plans back.
But Mikel Arteta understands that Emile Smith alone is not enough to keep their form up. Hence, the manager is urging transfer chief Edu to target more creative recruits. Due to Smith’s top form, Edu has two main concerns to look into in the transfer window.
Concerns over Emile Smith Rowe:
Arsenal chief Edu understands that Emile Smith has a very bad injury record. The 20-year-old is prone to pick up injuries fast and losing his creative play in the middle could cost Arsenal greatly. Hence, Edu is on the hunt in the transfer market to lure in some backups for the youngster. Mikel Arteta has also been urging the Arsenal hierarchy to sign some creative players into their ranks since his arrival.
The Englishman missed the start of the season with a shoulder injury. Smith was also out for nearly three months due to a groin injury during his loan at RB Leipzig. After recovering from the groin injury, Emile soon picked up adductor problems resulting in him losing an additional two weeks. A series of injuries hampered his loan spell in Germany, and Edu fears he may pick up injuries that may leave him on the bench for long.
Hence, Arsenal understand that signing a creative midfielder is a top priority for them. Edu already has a list of suitable targets who Arteta finds ideal to sign. Another concern Edu has is the player’s wages. Emile Smith currently earns a sum of £15,000 per week with a contract running until 2023. With the player performing at his best level for Arsenal, Emile may demand a raise soon.
However, the exit of Mesut Ozil to join Turkish side Fenerbahce will ease the pressure on Arsenal’s treasury. Ozil was being paid a mouthwatering £350,000 per week. Though the transfer was free and Arsenal had to settle funds with Ozil, his exit will relieve them of some huge wage bills. This will allow the Gunners to grant Smith with a raise if the player demands it.
Arsenal’s creative targets:
Mikel Arteta was keen to sign Houssem Aouar from Lyon last summer. But the French side kept rejecting Arsenal’s bid, hence the Gunners are eyeing other options now. The Athletic reports Arsenal are keen to sign Real Madrid ace Martin Odegaard on a loan deal. The Norwegian, who returned from an impressive loan spell at Real Sociedad, is finding it hard to secure minutes at Santiago Bernabeu.
Hence, the midfield ace had reportedly asked gaffer Zinedine Zidane to allow him to leave. This will open an opportunity for Arsenal, the Gunners are ready to guarantee him game-time. Signing Odegaard will allow Arteta to rotate his lineup between Smith and Martin Odegaard. This will help keep the youngster in good shape to prevent injuries. Arsenal are keen to sign him and Edu is hoping to put forward a bid to Real Madrid soon.
In addition to Odegaard, Christian Eriksen is also a likely target for Arsenal. Inter Milan are reportedly eyeing Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira. The Spaniard is having an impressive loan spell at Atletico Madrid. But Inter are keen to lure in Lucas to Italy to strengthen their ranks. They are willing to offer a player-swap deal, hence Arsenal have the option to sign Eriksen in exchange for Torreira.
Arsenal are keen to sign a creative midfielder and they have multiple options available at the moment. Mikel Arteta will make an analysis of the available options and go for the most ideal player, Edu is also ready to back the Arsenal boss. Though the title hopes for Arsenal will have to wait until next season, a top-four finish is not far away. Arteta and Edu hope to reinforce their squad in the transfer window and hope to win big soon.
